PC shipments fall for sixth straight quarter

Dell's recently announced XPS 15 has a 15.6-inch display with 3200x1800 pixels, record resolution.

Dell's recently announced XPS 15, which starts at $1,500, has a 15.6-inch display with 3200x1800 pixels, record resolution, for a PC laptop. It also uses the latest "Haswell" series of Intel processors. Both factors may be a plus in the PC market, which has suffered because of tablets and smartphones.

Worldwide shipments of personal computers fell in the third quarter of the year, the sixth straight quarter of decline as cheaper tablet computers and smartphones cut into demand, according to market research firms IDC and Gartner.

IDC said the market fell nearly 8 percent, to 81.6 million units, while Gartner put the decline at almost 9 percent, to 80.3 million. The two firms define PCs slightly differently.

IDC expects that the PC market will hit bottom sometime next year, with a recovery starting in 2015 as companies and consumers finally replace aging PCs. Gartner says this year will be the worst, with flat shipments next year and single-digit percentage growth in 2015.

"There's sort of a rubber band effect where PCs that need to be replaced will be," said IDC senior analyst Jay Chou.

Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said that in developed countries, consumers won't abandon PCs, though they are holding onto them longer and spending money on other gadgets before replacing them. "The overall market size will shrink, but at some point those old PCs will be replaced by new ones," she said.

The U.S. market emerged as a bright spot in both reports. IDC said the U.S. market was almost unchanged, while Gartner said it rose 3.5 percent. Gartner credited low supplies and Intel's new low-power Haswell line of chips with helping boost demand. IDC said falling prices of touch-enabled laptops also helped.

The outlook for a stabilizing PC market was mirrored by Hewlett-Packard, the world's No. 2 PC maker behind Lenovo. In a presentation before analysts Wednesday, the company predicted "stabilizing revenue declines" for its upcoming fiscal year, which starts in November.

The top 3 PC sellers — Lenovo, HP and Dell — all grew shipments between zero and 3 percent during the quarter, thanks in part to a healthy U.S. market, both research firms said. Acer and Asus suffered steep declines.

IDC said Acer and Asus suffered declines of about 34 percent, while Gartner pegged the drop at nearly 23 percent.

IDC said Acer suffered from weak consumer spending while Asus was hurt by a lack of corporate customers.

Betty Ford Center to merge with Hazelden

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -

Renowned addiction treatment providers Hazelden and Betty Ford Center announced today their respective boards have voted to merge.

In a joint statement, the Chair of the Hazelden Foundation Board of Trustees and the Chair of Betty Ford Center's Board of Directors, said, "The integration of these two industry leaders will expand our geographic reach to help more people. ?It will position us well to respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by health care reform and the rapidly changing marketplace. ?The merger will help us achieve scale so we're able to invest in state-of-the-art facilities and research and development."

The combined entity will constitute the largest nonprofit addiction treatment provider in the country.

"Both organizations are iconic leaders and have remarkable strengths," said Mark Mishek current Hazelden President and soon to be CEO of the new organization once the merger is effective.?"Combined, we will be able to do more than ever to help all those who are seeking recovery, find it and live it. ?This dynamic combination will enable the new `Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation' to become the acknowledged world leader dedicated to alcohol and drug addiction treatment and recovery."

Together, the new organization will offer residential and outpatient services based on its 12-Step, abstinence-based treatment model for individuals suffering from addiction, their families and other loved ones, at 14 sites across the U.S.

Also under the aegis of the new Foundation will be Hazelden's addiction and recovery publishing house (the nation's largest), a fully-accredited graduate school of addiction studies, an addiction research center, a prevention training program, along with Betty Ford Center's education arm for medical professionals and Children's Program.

The agreement now will head through the regulatory approval process, with the goal of completing the merger by year's end. ?

Under the terms of the merger agreement, the new entity will be named the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. ?The boards will merge; Mishek will become CEO of the combined organization. ?Hazelden will also rename its Women's Recovery Center in Minnesota to honor Betty Ford's commitment to promote treatment and recovery for women.

The Ford family will also play a role in the new organization. ?Ford's daughter, ?Susan Ford Bales, now trustee of the Elizabeth B. Ford Family Trust will help appoint two members of the board according to Mishek. ?Bales released this statement after the merger:

"I'm excited that mother's passion and vision for ensuring access to high quality treatment will be honored and expanded. ?Mother's and my focus will always be on the patients of addiction and alcoholism and their family members. She would be pleased, as am I, with the Hazelden organization and its outstanding leadership team and staff, each of whom shares our focus."

Hazelden, a national nonprofit organization founded in 1949, helps people fighting addiction. ?It has facilities in Minnesota, Oregon, Illinois, New York and Florida. ?

Betty Ford Center, a licensed addiction treatment hospital, is based in Rancho Mirage. ?Its Children's Program is also offered in Denver and Dallas/Ft. Worth. ?It is in the forefront of teaching medical professionals about the disease of addiction.

Breaking Bad wins top Emmy, upset for House of Cards

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Cult crime show "Breaking Bad" won the best drama Emmy on Sunday, but there was disappointment for "House of Cards," which had hoped to win the first major award for an online-only series.

The best comedy award went to "Modern Family," the fourth year in a row it has topped the category, while "Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons took the best comedy actor prize for a third time at the Emmys, television's version of the Oscars.

Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra" was the other big winner of the night, taking home prizes for best miniseries/TV movie, best actor for Michael Douglas as the flamboyant gay piano icon and best director Steven Soderbergh.

The critically-acclaimed "Breaking Bad," about a chemistry teacher turned drug lord Walter White, won the top drama prize only a weekend before its series finale next week after five seasons.

Show producer and writer Vince Gilligan looked shocked as he took the stage at the climax of the 65th Primetime Emmy awards show in Los Angeles. His show had been nominated for the top prize three times before.

"I thought this was going to be 'House of Cards'," he said, before adding that it could have been one of the other four shows nominated: "Downton Abbey," "Game of Thrones," "Homeland" or "Mad Men."

Perhaps the biggest upset of the night was for Jeff Daniels, who won best drama actor Emmy for his role as TV news anchor Will McAvoy in HBO's "The Newsroom."

The frontrunners had been "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston, who has already won it three times, and "House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey for his turn as scheming congressman Francis Underwood.

Claire Danes won best drama actress for the second year in a row for her turn as bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison in "Homeland," besting rivals including "House of Cards" co-star Robin Wright, who plays Spacey's character's wife Claire.

Disappointed fans of Kerry Washington had hoped she would become the first African American to win best actress in a drama for her role in ABC's political thriller "Scandal." She was the first nominated in the category since 1995.

On the comedy front, the top prize went to "Modern Family," about the dysfunctional antics of Jay Pritchett and his extended family in Los Angeles.

Political comedy "Veep" scored two wins with best actress for Julia Louis-Dreyfus and best supporting actor for Tony Hale.

Elton John meanwhile made a moving tribute to Liberace, playing a new song and acknowledging the gay piano icon's influence on his own music "and my dress sense," saying: "This guy played a mean piano."

Douglas, accepting the Emmy for his turn as Liberace, got laughs when paying tribute to co-star Matt Damon, who plays Liberace's gay lover Scott Thorson.

"This is a two-hander," he said, to widespread titters. "And Matt, you're only as good as your other hand ... The only reason I'm standing here is because of you."

Gripping the Emmy statuette, he said he would have to share it with Damon, who was also nominated in the same category. "You want the bottom or the top?" Douglas asked Damon, bringing the house down.

But the biggest loser of the night was "House of Cards," which had hoped to symbolize the direction the TV industry is going -- online.

The Netflix political drama aimed to become the first online-only series to win in major categories, but only took home a prize for best directing for David Fincher.

The series' success highlights the changes underway in the industry, with more and more viewers "cutting the cable" and watching favorite shows via the Internet on cellphones, tablets and so-called "smart TVs."
