December 30, 2011

Game Notes
DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team returns to action after the holiday break when it entertains ECAC-foe Brown University on Friday night (7 p.m.) at the Whittemore Center. The Wildcats, who are 6-3-0 at home, are trying to snap a three-game skid. The teams played to a 5-5 overtime tie a year ago.

Scouting the Bears:? Brown enters the matchup with UNH with a 4-6-1 overall record and an even 3-3-0 mark in ECAC. The Bears snapped a five-game winless draught with a 6-4 win over nationally-ranked Yale on Dec. 3 before the 27-day layoff. A well-balanced offensive attack is led by senior Jack Maclellan with five goals and four assists, while Bobby Farnham and Matt Wahl each have eight points for the Bears. In net, senior netminder Mike Clemente has seen every minute of action posting a 4-6-1 record with a 2.56 GAA coupled with a .907 save percentage. The Bears have been stingy defensively allowing just 2.73 GAA offensively, but are averaging only 2.18 over the first 11 games.

Series History vs. Brown: The Wildcats own a 20-13-2 all-time record vs. Brown in 35 all-time meetings dating back to Feb. 11, 1927. UNH is unbeaten in the last eight meetings with Brown (7-0-1) including a 5-5 come-back tie last year. The last time Brown defeated UNH was Dec. 1, 1987 (4-3). UNH last defeated Brown on Nov.? 26, 2007 (5-2). UNH has won 11 of the last 13 meetings and are 15-2-1 in the last 18 games. Mike Borisenok and Brett Kostolansky both scored goals in last year's game and are the top returners. Di Girolamo is 0-0-1 with a 4.66 GAA and a .815 save percentage against Brown

Last Time These Teams Met (11/23/10): Blake Kessel and Mike Borisenok scored goals 11 seconds apart late in the third period to lift UNH to a 5-5 non-conference tie against Brown University at the Whittemore Center. Trailing 5-3, the Wildcats called time out with 2:33 remaining and pulled goaltender Matt Di Girolamo in favor of an extra skater. Phil DeSimone swung the puck from the right circle to Mike Sislo at the opposite side. Sislo quickly made a touch pass to Kessel in the high slot and his shot sailed into the net at 18:07. Borisenok leveled the score, 5-5, at 18:18 when he corralled a loose puck in front of the net and beat Brown goalie Mike Clemente. Di Girolamo finished with 22 saves, including four in the five-minute overtime session. Clemente stopped 36 shots, including two in OT and 14 in the third period. It was the seventh time this season New Hampshire registered 40-plus shots on net. UNH's offense was led by Sislo (two goals, two assists) and DeSimone (three assists). Kessel tallied a goal and an assist. For Brown, Harry Zolnierczyk (2g, 1a), Jack Maclellan (3a) and Jeff Buvinow (2a) had multiple-point games.

Last Time Out (12/8/11): Casey DeSmith made 32 saves in his first collegiate start but UNH was defeated 2-1 by 11th-ranked Boston University in Hockey East action at the Whittemore Center. DeSmith made double-digit saves in both the first (11) and second (14) periods, and he stopped all seven shots in the final frame. BU netminder Kieran Millan finished with 28 saves, including 11 in the second stanza.

DeBut for DeSmith: In his first collegiate start, Casey DeSmith stopped 32 of 34 Terrier shots. DeSmith made double-digit saves in both the first (11) and second (14) periods, and he stopped all seven shots in the final frame.

Chevrier Departs: Freshman defenseman Eric Chevrier has left the Wildcats to go play junior hockey in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Surrey Eagles. Chevrier had not seen any game action this season. "I think Eric decided this option gives him an opportunity to play on a more regular basis and continue to develop as a hockey player," UNH coach Dick Umile. "Eric is a terrific young man and I wish him nothing but the best of luck in the future."

Burke Lights the Lamp for Third Time in Four Games:? Greg Burke scored UNH's lone goal, he has goals in three of the last four games.

Streaky 'Cats: The streaky Wildcats ended the first half by dropping five of its last six. UNH opened the season with four-straight loses before a seven-game unbeaten streak, which preceded the latest 1-5 stretch.

Coming Back from the Break: UNH is 4-8-0 since 2000 in games coming out of the break. However, the Wildcats have won just once in the last eight games out of the break.

Canada loses NHLer Devante Smith-Pelly to foot injury at world juniors

EDMONTON - Canada's team at the world junior hockey championship suffered a major blow in its tournament opener.

Forward Devante Smith-Pelly broke his left foot after blocking a shot in the second period of Canada's 8-1 rout of Finland on Monday and will miss the remainder of the tournament.

"Heartbreaking way to end my tournament, but I know the guys will do the country proud regardless. Thank you everyone for your kind words," said Smith-Pelly on his Twitter page.

The Anaheim Ducks forward, one of only two NHL players on the Canadian team, cannot be replaced on the 22-man roster.

The only situation in which a team could add another player at this point in the tournament would be in the case of a goaltender injury.

The six-foot, 207-pound Toronto native scored twice Thursday in Canada's 7-1 pre-tournament win over Switzerland 7-1.

The Ducks drafted Smith-Pelly in the second round, 42nd overall, and has contributed three goals and two assists in 26 games with Anaheim this season.

"This is a very unfortunate injury for Devante," said Ducks general manager Bob Murray in a statement. "We anticipated him playing a prominent role for Canada at the 2012 world junior tournament. Although this is a big loss for Canada and the Anaheim Ducks, we fully expect Devante to return to full health this season."

Hockey Canada says Smith-Pelly will remain with the Canadian junior team.

Holy Night

Although there is no exact demarcation as to the genesis of this odd holiday, the renowned Talmudist Rabbi Samuel Eides (commonly known as the Mahrasha in Torah circles) observed Nittel Nacht as early as the late 1500s. The Baal Shem Tov, a famous Jewish mystic and the founder of Hasidism, popularized the holiday in the 1700s. Many rabbis after him added on their own special rules. By the mid-1900s, when Judeo-Christian relations matured, the Christmas Eve customs fell mostly by the wayside as the Jewish community wanted to show their support for their Christian neighbors. While there are still some Orthodox groups that observe Nittel Nacht, these are not widespread customs among modern Jews. Indeed, in doing research for this article, I found that asking for information on Nittel Nacht was sort of equivalent to asking for directions to the nearest Freemasonry.

Mark Sanchez Can't Deliver As Jets Fall To Giants 29-14

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? The New York Jets put their playoff hopes in Mark Sanchez's hands against the Giants' porous pass defense.

The maligned quarterback couldn't deliver. Just like most of his teammates.

Sanchez threw a career-high 59 passes, completing 30 of them, but also had two interceptions and lost a fumble inside the 5-yard line in the Jets' 29-14 loss that was a devastating blow to their playoff hopes.

"We had a good opportunity to control our own destiny," Sanchez said. "It's completely our fault."

This was supposed to be the season the New York Jets got back to the Super Bowl and walked away with the Lombardi Trophy. Remember, Rex Ryan guaranteed it.

Well guess what? The Jets (8-7) had everything in place to make the boast come true and they gave it away over the past two weeks with a dreadful loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last week and this embarrassing setback in which Ryan's team didn't step up after a week of bragging about how good they are.

To get to the playoffs, the Jets have to beat Miami next weekend and get help, and lots of it. They have to hope for Cincinnati and Tennessee to lose, and either have Oakland or Denver lose next week to make the playoffs.

"I mean, we don't deserve to control our own destiny," linebacker Bart Scott said. "We haven't played good enough football to do that. We need to try to finish strong, but if you don't make it to the playoffs, you've got nobody to blame but yourself."

The loss to the Giants was stunning, especially after the Jets bragged they were the better team because they went to the AFC title game the past two years.

They didn't play like a title contender. After scoring on their first possession, they did nothing on offense. Sanchez turned the ball over three times, and the offense was 4 of 21 on third down and the line allowed five sacks. Defensively, the secondary missed a couple of tackles on Victor Cruz's record 99-yard go-ahead touchdown catch for the Giants and they saw Ahmad Bradshaw run over them on touchdown runs of 14 and 19 yards.

"This was a big game for us and in big games, you can't make mistakes," said cornerback Darrelle Revis, who was outstanding in defeat. "As well as we did play on defense, there were a couple of plays that we gave to them. It's real sad right now. We needed this win. We made some mistakes and they outplayed us."

Neither the Giants nor Jets looked much like playoff material, but the Giants can now win the NFC East with a victory over Dallas here next Sunday.

"To be honest with you, we need to put this one aside as fast as we can and go to work on Dallas with the same attitude we had last week," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "Basically, I just walked into the team meeting Tuesday and said, `if we win two, then we are in. I am not going to focus on last week's game at all, everything that we are going to do is in front of us.'

Cruz, who had three catches for 164 yards, broke Amani Toomer's single-season mark for yards receiving ? and the team's record for longest touchdown reception, a 99-yarder that gave the Giants the lead for good in the second quarter.

Ryan set the tone early in the week, saying he believed his club was the better team in the area. Tom Coughlin responded by saying, "Talk is cheap. Play the game."

It was the Giants who did.

"They were the better team today, and they're the better team this year," Ryan said. "Clearly, I was wrong."

The back-and-forth continued even before the game, when Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes and running back Brandon Jacobs both removed black curtains placed by the Jets over the Giants' Super Bowl logos. The Jets said it was simply their standard practice to cover those logos for every one of the team's home games, regardless of opponent, because it is the players' entrance.

It was a brutal game at times, with both offenses sluggish and prone to mistakes. The Jets were also penalized 10 times, including a late hit call on Aaron Maybin, who plowed into D.J. Ware in the fourth quarter ? a play on which Coughlin was injured out of bounds.

Eli Manning finished 9 of 27 for 225 yards, but Sanchez knew he and Ryan would shoulder the responsibility for the loss.

"I left a lot of completions out there," Sanchez said. "We just missed some things in the passing game and you just can't do that against a good defense like that."

The sloppiest stretch came midway through the fourth quarter with wild swings of momentum. The Jets got new life after an incompletion on fourth-and-1 from the 47 when Deon Grant was called for pass interference.

Two plays later, Plaxico Burress ? playing against the Giants in the regular season for the first time since they cut him in 2009 and he served a 20-month prison sentence on a gun charge ? was called for offensive pass interference to negate a touchdown pass.

On the next snap, Jason Pierre-Paul sacked Sanchez, who lost the ball, and it was recovered by Justin Tuck. Ryan challenged the play, and officials reversed the call, saying Sanchez's arm was going forward.

The Giants got their turnover moments later, though, when Sanchez fumbled the snap from center Nick Mangold in the end zone.

The ball changed hands again when David Harris intercepted Manning's toss that tipped off Hakeem Nicks' hands. The Jets got yet another break after Sanchez was ruled to have been sacked by Linval Joseph, who forced a fumble that the Jets recovered. Ryan challenged again, and the play was reversed, with officials saying it was incomplete.

On third-and-12 from the 13, Sanchez scrambled for 11 yards ? and Antrel Rolle was called for holding, putting the ball at the 1. Sanchez rolled right on the next play and dived into the end zone, making it 20-14 with 7:17 left.

But the Jets wouldn't get any closer. Chris Canty sacked Sanchez for a safety, and after an onside free kick by the Jets was recovered by the Giants, Bradshaw had a 19-yard TD run with 2:04 left.

Cruz's 99-yard catch ? the longest scoring pass in team history ? came with the Giants in dire straits facing third-and-10 from the 1. Manning, standing in the back of the end zone, zipped a pass to Cruz, who dodged tackle attempts by Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson and took off down the right sideline. Eric Smith was the only one with a chance to get him, but Cruz outran him to give the Giants a 10-7 lead with 2:12 left in the opening half.

It was also the longest offensive play against the Jets in team history ? and a sign of the type of afternoon it would be for them.

"I don't want to be the second-best team in this city," Ryan said. "No chance. I'm not signing up for that. We'll play them again. We'd be more than happy to go play them right now, but we're going to have to wait four years."

Notes: DE Jason Pierre-Paul had two of the Giants' five sacks, giving him 15 1/2 this season. ... Jets S Brodney Pool said he experienced migraine symptoms during the game, worsened after a hard hit in the third quarter when Bradshaw slammed into him. He said he was fine. ... Jets LB Garrett McIntyre hurt his knee covering the opening kickoff, and there was no immediate word on the injury.

8 US soldiers charged with death of fellow GI

Eight members of the US military are being charged in connection with the death of Private Danny Chen. Investigators reportedly uncovered evidence that Chen was the target of ethnic slurs and hazing before he was shot in Afghanistan. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Updated at 2:00 p.m. ET

Eight U.S. soldiers have been charged in the death of 19-year-old Private Danny Chen, who was found shot to death in a guard tower in southern Afghanistan.

It was first thought to have been a suicide, but the military's investigation found that the Asian-American had been the target of ethnic slurs and physical attacks by his fellow soldiers.

Chen was found dead?Oct. 3 with?a gunshot wound below the chin;?it's not?clear from?the charges whether the eight soldiers are accused of killing him or whether officials are alleging that their mistreatment of Chen led him to take his own life.

The military said the soldiers from Chen's company face charges that include dereliction of duty, assault, negligent homicide and involuntary manslaughter.

Chen's parents welcomed the charges Wednesday during an emotional news conference?at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in New York's Chinatown, where their?only child?grew up and went to school.

"Over two months of agonizing over the loss, it is of some comfort and relief to learn that the Army is taking this seriously,"?Chen's mother, Su Zhen,?49,?said through tears?in Chinese?as a family friend?translated. "(We) hope that the truth will come out and hopefully that what happened will not happen again."

Zhen,?who?came to the United States in 1987?from Taishan in southern China,?said she had not wanted?her only child -- a good student who had a lot of friends -- to join the Army. She said she "could not figure out why they (the soldiers) would do this to him."

Spencer Platt/Getty Images

A portrait of Army Pvt. Danny Chen is placed on a car in his funeral procession in Chinatown on Oct. 13 in New York City.

Chen's?father, Yantao Chen, 49, a cook who moved to America from the same province?in 1989, said through the?family friend?that?while well wishing "gives them comfort ? he realizes that Danny will never return, but it gives him hope."

The translating friend was Frank Gee, 72, an Army veteran, who said the family heard about the charges Tuesday from a lieutenant colonel in Afghanistan. He said they were expecting them, though Zhen cried when she heard the news.

"It's rather tough. ... The only child, especially (in a) Chinese family, a boy," Gee said. "They are learning to cope with it."

Chen was like "sunshine," said his aunt, Lucy Chen. "Danny (was) a very good boy ... We miss him."

Elizabeth OuYang, New York branch president of OCA, a national civil rights organization serving Asian Pacific Americans,?said?Chen was not depressed but had suffered emotional and physical abuse?in the military:?He was dragged from his bed and made to crawl while rocks were thrown at his back?and was forced to hold liquid in his mouth while doing chin-ups during his?two months?in Afghanistan. He was deployed there in August and had been in the military just seven months.

"Whether suicide or homicide, those responsible for mistreating Danny caused his death, and they must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," OuYang said at the news conference, noting that forensic expert Henry Lee would?conduct an independent autopsy.

Army says Danny Chen was bullied before his death. WNBC's Katy Tur reports.

She said she and community leaders?had a meeting last week at the Pentagon to put forward reforms to prevent such abuse and that they have another one on Jan. 4, where the commanding officer's report would be shared with them. She said they were told that a separate report by the Army's Criminal Investigation Command would be finished by the end of February.

"Clearly the Army?s diversity training is not effective," she said.?"It's not worth it (to serve) if we can't be protected from people who are supposed to be on our side."

Though the news of the charges was "amazing," she said it was only the beginning and that they did not want the soldiers to be able to plead to lesser charges, noting they wanted "a loud signal sent that our lives are not cheap."

Some 3,000 Asian Americans were recruited to serve in the U.S. military in 2009, OuYang wrote in October.

Rep. Nydia M. Velazquez, D-N.Y., called the day "bittersweet" and demanded a "clear accounting of the facts." She said minorities make up 35 percent of active duty forces.

"We need to know the whole truth," Velazquez said. "If there is a message to everyone in this country, especially to the armed forces, it's that racial intolerance and discrimination have no place in our military and we need to have that message clearly conveyed today."

Wellington Chen, executive director of Chinatown Partnership Local Development Corporation, cited a Chinese expression in saying the community could handle the truth and didn't want it to come out in bits and pieces: "If you have a fire, you cannot cover it with paper. The truth will come out."

The soldiers are still in Afghanistan but have been assigned to a different base, removed from their duty positions and placed under closer supervision, the military said.

An Army criminal investigation into the circumstances of Chen's death remains open,?a spokesman for the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigation Command told Reuters.

"Aside from investigating the actual cause and manner of Private Chen's death, we are also investigating the circumstances leading up to his death," U.S.-based spokesman Chris Grey said in an email.

Pattern of abuse
Last week, hundreds of supporters held a vigil and demanded answers in Chen's death. A group of community leaders at the vigil said it had a meeting at the Pentagon recently about the treatment of Asian soldiers in the military, and wanted the commanding officers to be punished.

At the vigil last Thursday, the soldier's family ramped up pressure on investigators, reading aloud letters Chen had sent home, reflecting the state of isolation he was in from being harassed by his comrades and superiors.

"'Feb. 27, 2011: Since I am the only Chinese person here, everyone knows me by Chen,'" read his cousin Banny Chen. "'They ask if I'm from China a few times a day... They also call out my name Chen in a goat-like voice sometimes for no reason.'"

"'People crack jokes about Chinese people all the time. I'm running out of jokes to come back at them.'"

Chen's death is one of several recent cases of alleged hazing in the military, according to OCA.

One of those was Lance Cpl. Harry Lew, who was hazed by fellow Marines, according to a U.S. military report on his April 3 death. The military accused three Marines?of beating Lew hours before he killed himself and charged them with hazing. They face court martial, The San Jose Mercury News reported.

"We clearly see this as a pattern, it doesn't take a genius to figure it out," Wellington Chen said. "To turn a human being into a killing machine, you need to condition them and sometimes once you unleash it, you may not be able to control it, that's the unfortunate part."

Lawyer Mathew B. Tully, an expert in military law and a former Army soldier, wrote in an article earlier this year that the "military?s zero-tolerance position on hazing has not completely eradicated the practice" of hazing.

"While some instances of hazing are as easy to identify as the marks they leave on victims, verbal or psychological offenses are not as black and white," he wrote. "For example, in 2007 three Marines based in Yorktown, Va., were charged with hazing subordinates after making them stand in formation for five hours and perform cleaning duties to the point of exhaustion, without food or sleep."

NBC New York and NBC News?contributed to this report.

International team explains why second infections can be worse

Dengue disease can be deadly. People infected by the mosquito-borne virus can develop an infection whose mild form is so harsh it's called "break-bone fever." Severe forms of the disease known as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome can be killers, making the disease a pressing public health problem in the sub-tropical regions where it is endemic. There is no treatment beyond fluid management, there is no therapeutic, and there is no vaccine. Why one person and not another succumbs to the virus has been suspected, but not known.

Scientists from the Broad Institute and the University of California, Berkeley, collaborating with virologists in the Ministry of Health in Nicaragua, have nailed down an important piece of the puzzle. Working with data from two long-term clinical studies of children in Nicaragua, they have captured the complex connection between a person's immune status and the viral genetics of dengue, both of which evolve over time. Their results, published in Science Translational Medicine, are based on advanced viral genomics technologies that revealed the precise genetic makeup of the infecting viruses and virologic and epidemiological analyses that connected genetic variants to disease severity.

"We've known for some time that the immunity of the individual mattered," said Matthew Henn, director of viral genomics at the Broad and the paper's co-corresponding author with Eva Harris of Berkeley. "And everyone has always thought that the genetics of the actual virus that infects someone matters. But no one's ever been able to put those two pieces of the puzzle together in a large-scale study in a natural epidemic. We were able to show how immunity conferred from a previous infection and the genetics of the virus come together to cause severe disease."

"This can explain why it has been so difficult to connect a particular dengue virus and a particular subtype to disease severity," said Harris, who is a professor of infectious disease and director of the Center for Global Public Health at Berkeley. "It's not just about the virus. One really needs to take a 'phylodynamic' approach, looking at the phylogenetics how these viruses evolve over time and linking it to epidemiology and immunology, which are also changing over time."

Immunity can be good and bad in dengue disease. Infection with one of the virus's four serotypes elicits a specific immune response to that one serotype, plus a measure of protection against its other three serotypes. This less-than-perfect immunity wanes over time, leaving the person not only vulnerable to a serotype that might circulate in the next epidemic, but also at greater risk of developing a severe form of the disease.

Through a phenomenon called "antibody-dependent enhancement," a theory advanced years ago, weakening antibodies make the infection worse by bringing the virus directly to cells that are the immune system's first responders, in a version of the Trojan horse story.

In addition, dengue viruses, like other RNA viruses, make imperfect copies of themselves as they spread through the body. Some genetic variants dominate at the expense of others, leading to wide diversity of genotypes within the four serotypes.

The Broad-Berkeley-Nicaragua team was able to show that children in Managua, Nicaragua, had different immunity depending on when they were born and what serotypes had circulated during their lifetime. Combining this information with high-resolution viral genomic data, they were able to show that the virus had significantly evolved during these years and that a huge surge in severe dengue disease after the 2004/5 season was driven by infection by specific viral lineages in specific immunological backgrounds. Certain genotypes of the virus were more virulent than others, and severe disease resulted in children according to their pre-existing or waning immunity. Depending on which of two different dengue serotypes the children were exposed to, they were more susceptible later to certain genotypes of the virus.

Even without antibody-dependent enhancement, these viruses are moving targets that make designing therapies difficult. Add antibody-dependent enhancement and vaccines, in theory, could induce the wrong antibodies and cause the severe disease they are intended to prevent. To minimize this potential risk, current vaccine formulations contain all four virus serotypes to produce immunity to the four dengue viruses at once.

Further refining of the genetic and immunologic map of both pathogen and host holds the key to predicting the evolutionary trajectory the virus will take, Henn says, and potential therapies could be based on that knowledge.

"Our results are really a starting point," Henn said. "Out of 10,710 nucleotides we've been able to nail a handful of mutations that seem to really matter. We're able to do that because we now have a high-resolution phylogenetic map of the virus. As we understand more about the immunologic background that the various genotypes proliferate in, and how that happens in different localities across the globe, we can start to put those two pieces of the puzzle together. This will enable us to more accurately predict which lineages will likely proliferate in different human populations at a given time. I'm hopeful that such predictions will translate to therapies."

Collaboration among the three groups made the work possible, Henn and Harris said. The study is part of the Genome Resources in Dengue Consortium, an effort initiated by Henn in 2005 and supported by the Genomic Sequencing Center for Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

The consortium's goal is to bring together researchers from around the world interested in applying genomic approaches to the study of dengue disease.

Obama wants payroll tax extended for entire year (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama, rebuffed by Congress on a yearlong extension of a Social Security payroll tax cut, said Saturday that it would be "inexcusable" for lawmakers not to lengthen the short-term deal when they return from their holiday break.

The measure, passed by the Senate shortly before the president spoke briefly at the White House, would extend the tax cut and long-term jobless benefits for just two months ? a partial victory for Obama that also sets the stage for another fight in February.

While pleased by the Senate vote, Obama said "it would be inexcusable for Congress not to further extend this middle class tax cut for the rest of the year. It should be a formality, and hopefully it's done with as little drama as possible when they get back in January."

He added, "This really isn't hard. There are plenty of ways to pay for these proposals."

The renewal of the 2-percentage-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax for 160 million workers and unemployment benefits averaging about $300 a week for the additional millions of people who have been out of work for six months or more is a modest step forward for Obama's year-end jobs agenda.

As a condition for GOP support of the payroll tax measure, Obama has to accept a provision that forces him to decide within 60 days whether to approve or reject a proposed a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline that promises thousands of jobs.

Obama made no reference to the pipeline in his remarks.

The bill awaits House action next week.

"I'm looking forward to the House moving forward and getting this done when they get back on Monday," Obama said.

Samsung Stratosphere review

Once upon a time, in the not-so-distant past, Verizon was still in phase one of its LTE lineup, which consisted of nothing but 4.3-inch slate phones with questionable battery life and very little to stand out from the rest of the competition. Now that we're seeing the second generation of devices coming into the 4G fold, Big Red appears to be pushing choice -- not just in terms of size and feel, but price as well. The Pantech Breakout was the first to, well, break out of the mold, offering a smaller form factor for a much more reasonable cost. It was nothing to write home about, but the fact that it existed gave us hope that we'd see a slew of phones in the same price range, finally making high-speed connectivity a more affordable option.

Shortly afterward, the Samsung Stratosphere sneaked up and snatched the spotlight away from Pantech, offering the very first QWERTY keyboard on an LTE-capable device for a cost similar to that of the Breakout. But when we first saw the phone, something felt eerily familiar: it looked almost exactly like the Epic 4G, a Galaxy S-era device that was released on Sprint's WiMAX lineup nearly a year and a half ago. Looks are one thing, but what about the internals? Does the brand new Stratosphere perform like an old phone, or does it give a completely fresh perspective on a 2010 classic? Read on for the full scoop.
