New owl species discovered in Philippines

Scientists and birdwatchers have discovered 10 new owl species in the Philippines, using advanced recording equipment that can distinguish between their hoots, a conservation official said.

Eight of the new species were previously considered sub-species while two are totally new, said Lisa Paguntalan, field director of Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Programme.

"There is no significant variation in their forms. It was the sound difference of their calls that was very significant in distinguishing between species," she told AFP.

Paguntalan warned that many of these new species were possibly endangered because they were found only in small isolated islands or in tiny pockets of forests.

Ornithologists and birdwatchers from Michigan State University, Birdlife International and other groups used museum samples and high-quality photography and recording systems to show the owls were of different species.

The research took 10 years but the results were only announced after coordination between the various groups.

The two new species are the Cebu hawk owl and the Camiguin hawk owl, found in the central Philippine islands of Cebu and Camiguin respectively.

They are described as about eight to 12 inches (20 to 30.5 centimetres) in size and hard to spot.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands with diverse animal species evolving in different parts of the country but many of these unique species are threatened by destruction of their habitat.

Washington Redskins vs. Chicago Bears: What We Learned About the 'Skins

Eleven things we learned from the second preseason game for the Washington Redskins:

?

Robert Griffin III remains on the right track

It was a mixed bag for RG3. He was sacked three times and had a fumble, but the protection wasn't very good. A fumble is never excusable, but he was merely trying to escape and was blindsided. It wasn't as bad in reality as it was on paper.?

He still looked poised in the pocket and rarely panicked. That he still completed five of his eight passes under that pressure is positive. His decision-making wasn't great, and 'Skins fans would prefer to see him take fewer hits, but it was the exact kind of performance you'd expect this early.?

Oh, and we finally saw him take off a few times. As expected, he looked good as a runner, yet he only attempted to run when absolutely necessary. Good discipline.

?

Kirk Cousins could force the Shanahans to consider dumping Rex Grossman

There's no questioning Cousin's arm strength, but very few could have seen this coming. The rookie fourth-round pick was remarkably accurate and efficient against Chicago's second-teamers, posting a 154.1 passer rating.?

He completed 18 of 23 passes, had three touchdowns and didn't get picked or sacked.?

I highly doubt Mike and Kyle Shanahan would want to start the season with two rookie quarterbacks leading the depth chart, but if something were to happen to Griffin, I think right now I'd prefer to see Cousins, not Grossman.

?

They'll make room for Aldrick Robinson, and maybe even Dezmon Briscoe

I realize that four receiver spots are already locked up, which means that keeping Robinson and Briscoe would spell the end for Anthony Armstrong and Brandon Banks. But at this point, you can't deny Robinson, who was the best receiver on the field Saturday night.?

Robinson was targeted seven times and made six catches for 104 yards to go along with a touchdown. We didn't see much of Armstrong, but he's had plenty of opportunities and hasn't delivered. Same goes for Banks, at least as a receiver.?

Briscoe had 51 yards and a touchdown catch. He, Robinson and Niles Paul looked great against second- and third-teamers. I'd love to see them give it a go against first-teamers next weekend when the 'Skins host the Colts.?

If I'm Shanahan, I'm letting Briscoe and Armstrong battle for the final roster spot.

?

Alfred Morris isn't going anywhere

The rookie sixth-round pick is still listed fourth on the depth chart, but he got the start against Chicago and once again ran aggressively and productively. He was bouncing off tackles and hitting holes hard on the first series of the game.?

Morris was less effective as the game progressed. His last three carries were either for one yard or no gain. But the Bears' defense isn't shabby, and the guy's still green. I don't expect his average to be very high this year, but I do expect him to play a key role on offense. And keep in mind that the run blocking from a patchwork offensive line left a lot to be desired.

Tim Hightower and Roy Helu are hurt, but there's still a lot to be positive about when looking at the Washington backfield. Morris and Evan Royster both looked good Saturday night. The 'Skins have lots of options.

?

What the offensive line did against Buffalo wasn't a good indication of what was to come

They protected well and opened up some holes in the preseason opener, but the patchwork line struggled Saturday night. Griffin was under pressure far too often, and Morris was running into brick walls. Trent Williams didn't have his best game, and Adam Gettis, Josh LeRibeus and Tyler Polumbus delivered poor performances.

Gettis and LeRibeus have an excuse. They're rookies being thrown to the wolves because of injuries. Polumbus embarrassed himself.

?

The secondary has work to do

Cedric Griffin was beat deep by Brandon Marshall on the first play of the game, and it often appeared too easy for Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell.

Griffin and Brandon Meriweather both had problems on Chicago's opening touchdown drive, while DeAngelo Hall was beaten twice and had a missed tackle on the final series of the first half.

?

The first-team run defense is in good shape

Even without London Fletcher, the 'Skins bottled up Matt Forte quite successfully. They gave up a few big gains later, and the tackling (or lack thereof) on Michael Bush's touchdown was a lowlight, but Chicago still didn't have a run all night that went for more than 10 yards.

?

The pass rush is going to be good

The 'Skins were pretty good at getting to the quarterback last year, but they should be even better this season. They got good pressure on Cutler, regardless of the fact they didn't sack him. Then they took Campbell down three times on 18 dropbacks.?

Brian Orakpo left with a shoulder injury, but Ryan Kerrigan and Perry Riley stepped up with a sack each, and Jarvis Jenkins also notched one. It's encouraging that they still brought heat without Orakpo. Riley and Jenkins are wild cards this season, and both looked good.

?

The defense again failed to capitalize?

They might get pressure and sacks, but this D continues to struggle at getting takeaways. It's an issue they had all last season, and it hasn't gone away. Redskins defenders dropped three would-be picks against the Bills, and Saturday night Josh Wilson had a terrible drop on a ball Cutler threw right at him.

Later, Richard Crawford made a great play on a pass breakup that also should have been an interception.

?

Brandon Banks is at least making things difficult for Mike Shanahan

Banks isn't good enough to make this team as a receiver, and Shanahan has said that'll be necessary if he wants to make the final 53. But he brought a punt back for a touchdown against Chicago. If no one else can step up on returns, Shanahan might have to consider finding a spot for Banks.

?

Kick return coverage could be something to watch

Eric Weems had a 48-yard return in the first half, and Lorenzo Booker took one to the house from five yards inside his own end zone. Greg McCoy also had a 25-yard return, which is above average.?

Walker takes 1-shot lead into 3rd round at Wyndham

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ? Jimmy Walker didn't go to the U.S. Open. Instead, he went to the doctor.

Now that his knee is feeling better, he's in a good spot to contend for his first PGA Tour victory.

Walker shot an 8-under 62 on Friday to take the lead at 12-under 128 after two rounds in the Wyndham Championship.

Defending champion Webb Simpson (63) was one stroke back. First-round leader Carl Pettersson (68), Tim Clark (67), Sergio Garcia (63) and rookie Harris English (64) were at 10 under.

Tim Herron matched the tournament record with a 61, but was still nine strokes back.

Play was halted for 1 hour, 17 minutes late in the day when a system of thunderstorms passed through the central North Carolina Triad.

Walker, a 33-year-old Texan who finished in the top 10 in three of his first six tournaments, tore his left meniscus earlier this year. He skipped the U.S. Open and instead got a cortisone shot to reduce the swelling.

"There for a while, I was out of my routine because I couldn't bend down, I couldn't read putts the way I wanted to," Walker said. "I got that fixed and started feeling pretty good about everything again, and, you know, all the stuff I had been working on (was) starting to pay off."

He began the day four strokes back, had eight birdies in compiling one of the best two-day scores in event history. Only Pettersson at 125 in 2008 was better than Walker through 36 holes at Sedgefield Country Club.

"I was playing with J.B. (Holmes), and he was bombing the driver everywhere, and I was just kind of bunting the 5-wood around and hitting good approach shots," Walker said. "It was pretty boring-looking golf ? not a lot of drivers, not a lot of 3-woods. There's a lot of 5-woods and some irons, and it's just kind of placement around the golf course."

And now that he can bend down and read greens again, he can do some damage with his putter. He used it just 26 times Friday, and didn't even need it on No. 2 because he chipped in from 50 feet.

"If it wouldn't have gone in, it probably would have rolled over the back of the green," he said.

Pettersson, who shot a 62 on Thursday while playing in the morning, found his familiar Sedgefield course to play tougher in the afternoon. The Raleigh resident and member of the country club's board of directors had two bogeys in a three-hole span midway his round, then came on strong with consecutive birdies on Nos. 9-10 and an eagle on the par-5 15th.

He broke his driver on the next-to-last hole of the first round, used his backup driver Friday and will stick with it the rest of the weekend.

"I struggled today," Pettersson said. "Didn't have much today, but I thought it was a good comeback. ... Two-under par was OK for the game that I had, and hopefully I can hit the ball better on the weekend and have a chance."

Simpson, a native North Carolinian and U.S. Open champ who's defending a title for the first time in his career, got hot on the back nine with birdies on four of his final five holes to rocket up the leaderboard.

"To play a round on a golf course this tricky without a bogey is always a good thing," Simpson said.

Herron rebounded after an opening 76. He became the fourth player in five years here to shoot a 61 and the first since Kevin Na in 2010.

"I didn't really have anything to lose," Herron said. "I kind of zoned in a little bit today and just kind of kept rolling and making putts."

It might have been just the strong round he needed to secure himself a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Herron arrived at No. 133 on the points list and has to crack the top 125 to qualify for The Barclays next week.

The field is littered with players trying to prolong their seasons for at least one more week. Among those on the borderline who made it to the weekend were No. 122 Trevor Immelman, No. 129 Y.E. Yang and No. 133 Chez Reavie.

No. 126 Brendan Steele appeared to be in trouble before a run of four straight birdies pushed him to 3 under.

For others, there was bubble trouble. No. 121 Boo Weekley and No. 125 Jhonattan Vegas missed the cut of 1 under.

Union Superintendent Cathy Burden retires at school year's end

Related story: Union fetes Collegiate Academy.

"This has been the highlight of my career. I am Union through and through," she told the Tulsa World. "No doubt I love this job. It's been a joy." Burden said she wants to spend more time with her grandchildren after 41 years in education.

She announced her retirement during the yearly kickoff program for teachers and staff Thursday. More than 1,700 employees packed the Union Performing Arts Center.

The district's school board has already selected Associate Superintendent Kirt Hartzler as her successor. He started his Union career as a teacher and coach 26 years ago.

Hartzler's succession will allow the district to avoid disruptions that can accompany national searches, she said.

Burden began her career by creating a learning disabilities program in Norman as she attended graduate school.

She was then a school psychologist at Tulsa Public Schools for 12 years. She worked at Jenks for eight years, six of those as an assistant superintendent. In 1994, Burden was hired as Union superintendent.

Her last day will be June 30, she said.

The ability to fight for public education in the face of criticisms "makes my job even sweeter," Burden said.

"It's been a good fit. People don't fully appreciate the function of public education. Public education is a bedrock of democracy. Without it, we would lose something very important," she said.

In her last year, Burden said she will continue to speak out when some try to chip away at public education.

"I am not backing down," she said. "This is a difficult time for public education. Poverty is expanding the gulf between society's haves and have-nots. The world economies are shifting, and America is desperate to maintain our superiority in all areas. People are looking for scapegoats to blame for a myriad of social problems, and public schools have become an easy target."

Hartzler said he plans to continue Burden's fight when he steps into the superintendent role.

"Public education is definitely what has made this country great, and it's what is going to continue to keep it," he said.

As for Union, Hartzler said there is still more to do.

"We have a belief about us. Our belief is that when we say 100 percent graduation is our goal, we mean it," he said. "We believe in the potential of all our students regardless of demographics."

Earlier this year, Tulsa Superintendent Keith Ballard and Jenks Superintendent Kirby Lehman also announced they would retire June 30, 2013. Sapulpa Superintendent Mary Webb retired in June.

95% Searching for Sugar Man

Searching for Sugar Man. A man getting paid his dues 20 years later in the most magical of ways. Simply remarkable!A musician lighting himself on fire while on stage, committing suicide in the most horrific of ways. A fan's recollection is how Searching for Sugar Man starts. What a story.Sixto Diaz Rodriguez AKA Rodriguez writing and performing his poetic, grim observations of the working class and their unfair treatment in Detroit, circa mid-1970s. The hopes and dreams of being signed to a label, with Bob Dylan comparisons. A gig gone bad and the unpredictable music industry in the U.S. not paying an announce of attention. Dead in America, metaphorically, and literally, to those in South Africa, where he was kind of a big deal!South Africa at the height of Apartheid is something I've never explored. I was astounded to hear the levels of control the government enforced, from controlling the news cycle to scratching out tracks containing unruly lyrics on I Wonder. Amidst all this, a copy of Rodriguez's album, Cold Fact, makes its way into South Africa. It's heard at a party. The anti-establishment lyrics instantly connect. Bootlegging ensues, word spreads, and Rodriguez is the voice of a movement. This isn't cult status we're talking, this is BIGGER THAN ELVIS. Bigger than The Rolling Stones. The impact and influence his music had is mind-boggling.Rodriguez was none the wiser. Even with the bootlegging, Cold Fact went Gold ten times over. I won't get into the farce of loyalties and Sussex; needless to say, Rodriguez wasn't informed, and the people of South Africa are left wondering who this mysterious man is. There was nothing ever written about him in American publications, and the record sleeve had three names is all. No one knew where he was from, his real name, or how he died. Two men wondered a little more than the rest. When the CD was finally released in the early 90s in South Africa, one wrote the intro to the inside sleeve, and asked why they know so little about Rodriguez. The other man saw said sleeve. They got in contact, exchanged notes, made a breakthrough about where Rodriguez was from, via his lyrics, and created a website to search for more information about the Sugar Man.Getting in contact with Rodriguez's former producer leads to excitement and a million questions, not the least of which is, "How did Rodriguez die?". "What do you mean, die? He's very much alive".I'd enjoyed the heck out of this documentary up to this point. It got infinitely better. The revelation that Rodriguez was alive, going about his everyday construction job, never overly mournful about his "failed" music career was enough. He gets in contact with the two South African fans. They have the conversation of their life. Again, I was content. It's still not over though, folks.Sixto Diaz Rodriguez sells out 5 concerts in a triumphant tour of South Africa, 20 odd years after his music reached their shores. On stage, to a packed audience, and overwhelming adoration, he finds his home.I'll say it again. What a story!Documentary filmmakers are incredibly devoted to their craft. I bow down to you, Malik Bendjelloul. I have a newfound love for documentaries that became fully realised at SXSW this year. Searching for Sugar Man is up there with the best of what I've seen.As much as I admire screenplays and fictional writing, there are millions of unbelievable, fascinating, real stories about this world that need to be told, and I love the Documentary for doing that.I had no idea what to expect going into Searching for Sugar Man. All I'd heard was that it won the Audience Award at Sundance 2012. I'm glad I knew nothing else, and I came out of this learning a hell of a lot, beaming ear to ear.

Mass. man gets 'wrong' lottery ticket, wins $1M

BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) ? When a store clerk gave a Massachusetts man a different kind of scratch-off lottery ticket than he asked for, he didn't make a big deal about the mistake; he said he just "rolled with it."

It was a good decision: He won $1 million.

Richard Brown of Taunton said he went into Gulf Taunton recently and asked for a $5 "Blue Ice 7s" ticket, but the clerk was distracted and instead gave him a "Sizzlin 7s" ticket.

Brown selected the cash option on the prize and received a one-time lump sum payment of about $430,000 after taxes. He plans to use the money for a new roof on his home and to take a trip to San Francisco.

The store gets a $10,000 commission.
