Jewelry DIY Projects: Fun Craft Ideas For Buttons, Beads And More

From Networx's Linda Merrill:

Most of us have a drawer, box or other spot where we throw slightly damaged, or even perfectly good, bits and bobs that we?re not quite sure what to do with. An old brooch that has lost its pin, an extra draw pull or door knob, a fabulous earring whose mate has gone missing. Perhaps we ?inherited? such a box from an elderly relative or friend. These little items are certainly hard to part with and while none may have much monetary worth, it doesn?t mean that they have no value. Here are some great re-uses for these items.

List and captions courtesy of Networx

  • Vintage Jewelry, Orphan Earrings And Buttons:

Once you are sure that none of these items have any real worth (the jewelry is costume, the missing earring is never to be found) you can turn these sparkly pretties into stylish magnets for use on your refrigerator or other metal surface. Using small wire cutters or needle-nose pliers, remove any pins or posts and affix a magnet to the back using a strong adhesive such as Super Glue. Bonus: A vintage metal or silver serving tray can be hung on the wall for a more glamorous bulletin board.

  • Small Stones

If you?ve been in the habit of <a href="http://www.networx.com/article/10-creative-uses-for-leftover-pebbles">picking up stones on the beach</a>, you may have what you need to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind drawer pulls for a vanity or dresser. Natural elements such as stones bring the outdoors right inside and bring instant style and creativity to your environment. Make sure each stone is approximately the same size and relatively smooth to the touch. Glue the stone to an inexpensive, small and flat cabinet pull using a strong adhesive that works with mixed materials.

  • Vintage Silver Flatware

Sterling silver and even silver plate are relatively soft materials and can easily be bent for other uses besides eating. Cut off the working end of a spoon or fork and turn the remainder of the handle onto itself to make an elegant set up napkin rings; it doesn?t matter if they are matching or all different. Bend out the middle of a spoon or fork and flatten the end of the hand to create a door handle for kitchen cabinets. Using a drill, affix the handles in place with metal screws. Silver or standard metal forks can be used as garden markers by inserting small signs through the tines to mark the placement of certain flowers or plant material. The handle-end easily inserts into the ground.

  • Embroidery Hoops

If you or someone you know took up embroidery as a hobby, you undoubtedly have hanging around a pair or two wooden hoops. The hoops, which come in many sizes from very small to very large, consist of an inner ring and outer adjustable ring with screw clamp. In addition to showing off embroidery work, the hoops can serve as easy frames for showcasing interesting fabrics, wall papers or even photographs. Simply stretch the fabric or paper over the outside perimeter of the inner ring and trim to size. Screw on the outer ring and hang on a simple nail or picture hook.

  • Cabinet Hardware

Make use of extra cabinet hardware such as small knobs or cup pulls to create a useful and stylish jewelry organizer. Start by wrapping a small piece of luan or plywood board in your fabric of choice. Small knobs can be used to hang necklaces or bracelets from, French wire earrings can be hung on small drawer rods and inverted cup pulls (bottom side up) can hold small items such as brooches and rings. Determine the placement of the hardware and screw into the wood. Mount the organizer right on the wall. Babbel

When I was a high school student learning Spanish, I simply couldn't afford expensive language-learning programs to supplement my studies. Back then, even simplistic audio CDs with workbooks?a format I honestly don't mind?started around $50 or $100, but that would be for just a few lessons. Oh, how times have changed. But can a little-known, online-only, multi-sensory language-learning program that's also very inexpensive be any good? For Babbel (from $12.95 per month), the answer is yes.

I've been exploring Babbel's courses for a few weeks, focusing on German but dabbling in Spanish and Italian a bit to get a sense of how much different courses vary. Considering I had never heard of Babbel before I started testing it, I approached the online language-learning program with more than an ounce of skepticism regarding quality of the content. Boy was I in for a pleasant surprise.

I'd put it on par with Living Language (Platinum) ($179 per year, 3.5 stars) in many respects. I like Babbel's core content better, as well as the ability to pay per month and quit any time, but I also can't deny the huge value-add in Living Language's unlimited real-time Web classes, hosted by trained instructors. Babbel doesn't have that.

Another online-only program that's comparable is Duolingo (free, 4 stars), an Editors' Choice for its ability to deliver outstanding and challenging language-learning content for free, although it's limited to just four languages. Budget-conscious learners who can't find their language of choice in Duolingo (which has Spanish, German, English for Spanish speakers, and French in beta) should give Babbel a whirl, but be sure to take the free trial offer first to gauge the quantity of content for your tongue, as it varies drastically. For more program suggestions, see "The Best Software for Learning a Language."

Languages Offered
Babbel is available in Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

That's not quite so many languages as offered by the highly interactive Editors' Choice Rosetta Stone version 4 TOTALe (with even more languages offered if you search beyond "version 4"), or the mostly audio program Pimsleur Comprehensive. If you're looking for a language that's not in high demand, try either of those programs.

Quality and Quantity
As mentioned, Babbel's quality exceeded my fairly modest expectations. I have yet to encounter an error, poorly designed feature, or truly lackluster exercise. Even in competing programs, like Living Language, I came across a few boring mini-games or long stretches of text that I would ultimately just skim. Babbel keeps most of its reading material to tight segments that enhance and reinforce concepts as you learn them.

The overall structure makes sense, too, and progress markers mostly do their job of tracking your work (more on those two points on the next page). All the audio content sounds fine, with the occasional microphone plosive here and there. It's not music-studio grade recording, but it's not low-fi either.

Quantity of content, on the other hand, varies by language. If you're looking to learn Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, or German, for example, you'll find much more content than if you're working on Dutch, Indonesian, or Polish. Luckily, you can take up Babbel on its free trial to make sure what's included matches your learning level, and if you do subscribe to the service and still find that it's not what you expected, you can leave after a month having only shelled out about $13.

Price
A big selling point for Babbel is price. The online-only program offers three subscriptions: $12.95 per month; $26.85 every three months; or $44.70 every six months.

Compare that with Tell Me More, which charges $199 for a three-month Web pass, or Living Language's $179 price for year-long access, and Babbel seems like a great bargain. With Living Language, you also get to take as many 30-minute webinar-style classes with a live teacher as you can cram into a year. That's a huge value-add and should be something conversational-level learners should consider.

HBT: Valentine 'completely wrong,' says ex-bench coach

Tim Bogar, who spent this season as Bobby Valentine?s bench coach, responded to the former manager?s comments about the Red Sox coaching staff undermining him by saying Valentine is ?completely wrong.?

?That bothers me because of what the coaches went through this year and what we dealt with,? Bogar said, via Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston. ?The coaching staff was prepared to do everything that we were supposed to do to help Bobby succeed, but not once did he portray what he wanted us to do to help him and eventually he shut some of us out completely.?

Earlier this month, before being fired, Valentine said during a radio interview that he felt the coaching staff undermined him and last night in an interview with Bob Costas on NBC Sports Network he made similar comments and said: ?I should have made sure the coaches were my guys.?

Bogar, who was a holdover from Terry Francona?s staff, insisted that his relationship with the players remained strong. ?The only bad communication was between Bobby and everyone,? Bogar said. ?The rest of the communication was great. I talked to the players daily about stuff. We talked about everything. The coaches talked about everything.?

Dustin Pedroia called Bogar a ?calming voice? and Mike Aviles noted that he?d always go to Bogar with questions because ?he?s one of those guys who has great communication skills.? Of course, McDonald writes that Valentine ?resented the fact that the players often spoke with the coaching staff and not directly with him.?

But honestly, knowing what we know about Valentine and his inability to avoid making off-field headlines, if you were a player with an issue would you talk to him or a member of his coaching staff?

Police release dash cam video of car-chase crash that killed Texas teen

by KHOU.com Staff

Posted on October 23, 2012 at 4:32 PM

HOUSTON?Police have released dash cam video of the crash that killed 16-year-old Shawn Williams over the weekend.

The video shows an officer starting the chase of the fleeing pickup truck. It had been seen at a shoplifting incident at San Jacinto Mall, and then was found minutes later at another shoplifting attempt at a nearby Academy store.

The truck shown bouncing through a ditch had just rammed a Baytown police vehicle, and then raced south on Garth road at a high rate of speed.

The officer backs off and keeps a visual on the truck as it races in oncoming traffic and blows through red lights.

Two miles later, as another officer is laying down spike strips, there is an explosion. The footage shows the car holding Williams and 17-year old Shay Hollingshead in flames. Two people are seen running, later identified as Shannon Joe Chauncey and Jennifer Jenkins, who were captured moments later.

Police believe they did all they could to avoid the loss of life. Williams? family says that is not their concern right now. Their focus is on celebrating the life of a young man loved by everyone who knew him.

"We teach our kids that ?live life like it?s your last day," said Shawn?s father. "He would do everything. And he always lived for the benefit of someone else."

"I didn?t think I would ever see people in the community this attached to one of my children, to our family, you know. Thank you," said Shawn?s mother Pleshette.

The argument over his death and who is to blame will wait for another day. In the meantime, Shay Hollingshead remains in critical condition.

Microsoft's Surface tablet tries to plot out the future of computing

"Ma'am, we need you to take the laptop out of the bag," the TSA agent says as he hands me my backpack.

But I've already taken my laptop out of the bag. All that's left inside are an iPad and Microsoft's Surface tablet. He pulls out the Surface with its Touch Cover on top and says "It's a laptop, right? It needs to go through in its own bin." I pull the keyboard off the Surface and toss the two pieces -- tablet and keyboard -- into a bin.

Microsoft's Surface RT ($499) is a 10.6-inch tablet that runs Windows RT, a version of Windows 8. It is also more than a tablet when you pay an extra $100 and get the Touch Cover with a built-in keyboard that clicks onto the bottom of the tablet. Microsoft has spent millions of dollars and hours perfecting the Surface hardware and software so people will, well, replace both the iPad and the laptop in their carry-on bags.

WATCH: Microsoft Surface Video Review

Hardware Built to Fall

I don't worry about tossing ? and I mean really tossing -- the Surface into the bin. That's because a few days earlier I watched the tablet fall 30 feet onto the floor of Microsoft's testing lab. Constructed of VaporMg, a new material engineered by Microsoft, the tablet is built to withstand the toughest bumps and bruises. And it feels really durable when you hold it; there's no flex to the screen or the back casing. The screen itself is covered with durable Gorilla Glass, too.

And yet, despite the rough-and-tough build, the tablet is only 0.06 pounds heavier than the new iPad, and even then it has a full-sized USB port, mini-HDMI port, larger screen and built-in stand. According to the spec sheets, it's the same thickness as Apple's tablet, but the way the edges flare inward, it actually appears a bit thinner.

A Wide Screen With a Kick

The tablet is much taller than the iPad since Microsoft used a 10.6-inch screen to accommodate a wider keyboard and to provide more horizontal space for the software. iPad users will notice the difference instantly; when holding it horizontally, your hands are further apart and it's a wider tablet to manage. New iPad owners will also notice the difference in the display. While the display on the Surface appears to be just as bright and vibrant, its 1366 x 768 resolution screen doesn't always make for as crisp a picture as the iPad's Retina display.

Having become a master at creating a pillow stand for my iPad, I've been delighted with the kickstand that pops out of the Surface back. The metal stand lies flush with the tablet when it isn't in use, but when you extend it, it holds the tablet almost vertically. Unfortunately, you can't adjust the angle and it's harder than it should be to pull out the metal stand. (My manicure didn't appreciate it!) But whether it is propping the tablet up on a plane's tray table or in bed, it's an extremely handy feature.

Touch Typing

Both that wider screen and the kickstand help set the stage for the last important piece of hardware: the attachable keyboard covers. The Touch Cover is a lot like Apple's Smart Cover ? it uses strong magnets to latch onto the bottom of the tablet ? but there's a keyboard built into the seriously skinny 3mm cover. The keyboard is flush with the cover, but underneath it lies a thin layer of touch sensors. It creates an entirely new typing experience ? one that falls between typing on the glass of a tablet and a regular keyboard.

At first, typing on the tablet cover felt odd. It took me about two hours to get entirely comfortable but now, after a week's experience, I am able to type 75 words per minute. That's less than I type on a regular keyboard but about equal to my speed on some popular iPad keyboard covers. The magnets attaching the cover and the tablet are so strong that you can even hold the tablet upside down by just holding the cover.

There's also the Type Cover, which is similar to a traditional keyboard with physical keys. I can type faster -- 86 words per minute ? on the Type Cover but it isn't nearly as much fun to use as the Touch Cover. Both covers have small trackpads that are useful when navigating cramped menus in Office 2013. They supports two-finger scrolling, but not pinch-to-zoom.

The Touch Cover, which is available in a number of colors, flips over the tablet to make it appear like a book. Word to the wise: The white cover is a lot like white socks; it gets dirty easily, so expect to clean it often.

Windows 8 RT

The tablet's hardware is top-notch, but what about the software? The Surface runs a stripped-down version of Windows 8. Called Windows RT, it is designed for tablets with lower-powered ARM processors, like the ones that power smartphones and tablets. Unlike Windows 8 for Intel and AMD processors, you can only download apps through the Windows Store; no programs or apps through the Web browser. It comes loaded with Office 2013, which includes Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.

Otherwise, Window RT gives you all the other features of Window 8: the Start Screen, which consists of different live tiles or apps, the ability to lock apps side-by-side and swipe in apps from the left. While it includes a traditional Desktop screen, you can only run Office programs from it.

The Surface pushes Windows 8's general interface along smoothly, and the architecture lets it function like the iPad or smartphones. It boots up in under 30 seconds, resumes from sleep in under three seconds, and lasts nearly nine hours on a charge when playing video. (I got considerably less battery life when just using it to write and surf the web). This isn't like the PCs you have come to know; there's no time to get a cup of coffee as it boots or the need to drag a clunky charger everywhere.

However, the software can get sluggish, especially when you're opening apps or running more than a few of them or typing with Microsoft Word. Many times while typing this review on the tablet, I would input a series of words and the tablet would take a few seconds to catch up with my typing. The system can also get bogged down fairly easily, causing small graphical glitches. With the keyboard attached, you come to expect laptop performance of the Surface and it can't always keep up. (I haven't noticed these performance issues on any of the Intel-powered, Windows 8 Pro tablets or laptops I have been testing over the last few weeks.) Microsoft says there should be an update soon to address the issues.

Windows App Store

But even when the keyboard is detached, I found myself getting frustrated by something else -- the lack of applications available in the Windows Store. Now, Microsoft is promising many more apps on Windows 8 launch day (Oct. 26) but as of this writing the apps I use most frequently on my iPad-- including Facebook, Twitter, Flipboard, Yelp, and news apps -- were missing from the store. While there is a selection of games, there's no Words with Friends, Scramble with Friends, etc.

Yes, you can access the websites for many of those services through the browser, but those aren't very touch friendly, and when the keyboard is detached, you want a more finger-friendly experience. Over the past few weeks Microsoft has announced Skype, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Angry Birds and other key apps, but there's no saying when other big-name apps will come along. Also, remember that because you're unable to download other apps through the browser, you are limited to what is in the Store.

Bottom Line

The Surface isn't a laptop as the TSA agent thought, but it isn't a tablet either. It's a whole new category of computer, one of many coming out with Windows 8 this week. It has the potential to change how we use our devices ? to be a tablet to lean back with on the couch and a full computer when you click in the keyboard.

But only part of its potential is fully realized at this point, and that's the hardware -- ironic for Microsoft, a software company. Windows RT is new and it shows; there are still performance kinks and the disappointing app selection limits the tablet in its functionality, despite its full version of Microsoft Office. Other full Windows 8 tablets and computers, like Acer's W510 and even the Surface Pro coming in January, are more appealing at this point because of their full Windows 8 software.

The Surface is full of potential, but until its software performance and apps are as strong as its hardware, I, unfortunately, will still drag both a laptop and an iPad through security.

Expert Advice on Web-Based CRM Software | Business.com Blog

For start-ups, communication between the marketing, sales and customer service department is simple; all the business owner has to do is talk to herself.

But if the start-up starts to grow, these jobs ? once handled by one person ? are delegated to new hires. The result? Communication becomes more fragmented.

Cue CRM software.

CRM software streamlines not only the customer experience ? by consolidating all information and communication with customers into an easily accessible database ?? but it also improves the overall business process, eliminating redundant work and errors.

We recently caught up with Ian Moyse, the sales director at Workbooks.com, a cloud CRM vendor. Among many accolades and awards, Moyse was named one of the top 200 cloud channel experts in the world in 2011 and was first in the United Kingdom to pass the CompTIA Cloud Essentials specialty certification exam earlier this year.

I have used a varying range of CRM systems in my directorship roles over the past 20+ years including?Workbooks.com, Salesforce, Siebel, Sugar, Netsuite and Superoffice, and now work as sales director at Workbooks. Having run a number of teams ? from smaller start-up businesses to large, multinational sales teams ? I have experience ?of the needs of a CRM from a customer perspective and also the frustrations often experienced. CRM is a solution and outcome decision, not a technology driven one.

What are the advantages of using CRM software?

CRM used correctly can be transformational for a business, not only allowing all accessing it to have a common and consistent view of a customer?s information, activities and communications, but also improving business processes, removing duplication and errors and driving efficiency. CRM can extend outside of the traditional sales and marketing to encompass support, finance, operations and to drive better interaction across departments.

What are some of the most popular functions of this software? In your opinion, what are some of the most underused functions?

CRM typically gets led by a sales and marketing requirement and the most common uses begin from managing contact details to storing email conversations and activities that have occurred around this customer. The real benefit jumps to a company, however, come when? you integrate and bring together the varying other interactions and parts of the business with the CRM. These include marketing campaigns and tracking spending and success/failures to enable smart decisions and future activity planning. Operations and finance being integrated can greatly benefit the organization ? allowing sales to have visibility of what a customer has ordered, is licensed for, has paid before, is due to renew, etc. and allowing easy visibility of what a customer has bought, are they up to date with their support contract, have they paid, etc.

Workbooks customer Adam Smith, Managing Director of Rawnet, commented: ?Prior to implementing Workbooks, invoicing was such a manual process, but with Workbooks it?s so easy. Once an order is completed we can convert this into an invoice at the click of a button, and it is linked with Sage and raised automatically. Raising invoices is no longer a big task.?

What types of businesses would benefit most from CRM software?

Businesses of all sorts, sizes and across industries can benefit from a good CRM platform to underpin its information and customer interactions. It is key, however, that businesses choose the right CRM platform for their business needs and do not get distracted by brand or technology features. Increasingly, sales teams are on the road or dispersed across the country and others may be working from home. This geographic freedom offers significant benefits t0 businesses, but can make it difficult for business leaders to keep track of sales activity and progress as well as productivity of its workers.

At Workbooks, we have customers across all industries and are experiencing a large increase in companies moving from legacy contact management type on network platforms ? such as ACT and Goldmine ? to more robust and effective cloud-based fully fledged CRM solutions such as Workbooks.

When should a business think about implementing CRM software?

The simple truth is that too many organizations buy an off-the-shelf CRM solution, without first considering what business issues they really want to address. The old saying goes that ?if you don?t know where you?re going, any road will get you there,? and this is true with CRM.

A CRM solution should be a serious consideration if a business finds they are duplicating customer information in silos in the business and are not able to easily see all communications that have been made with a client or prospect. It should also be considered if the company does not have easy and quick ways to gather management information on issues such as which clients have not renewed, who places the most support calls, the correlation between sales and the client calls and visits made, and what marketing expenditures work and what are wasted.

Additionally, if you find much of your business ? such as renewals, forecasts and reports ? are difficult to get and end up being run on spreadsheets, it is likely time for a more effective and consistent CRM delivery method. CRM done well can have a dramatic benefit to the business.

What are the advantages of cloud computing??

Cloud delivery of CRM (delivered over the internet as Software as a Service, SaaS) has a great deal of benefits, especially for the smaller business that typically cannot afford the cost and time to build the resilience and security into a system run internally. Using a cloud CRM, such as?Workbooks.com, enables a customer to quickly switch on the service and log straight in. No hardware to buy or set up, no software to install and maintain and upgrade.

As a hosted provider, we provide CRM service from multiple, highly-secure and resilient data centers, enabling a customer to simply use and not worry about the backups, the resilience to ensure availability (which we guarantee at 99.5 percent of the year) and the security where we have invested and built highly-secure systems using security experts and involving regular penetration testing by third parties.

Customers also get an easy way to allow user access across multiple offices, locations or from mobile devices without any IT setup or complications at their end.

What do you do to ensure security for businesses using your web-based software?

Workbooks treats Information Security as its top operational priority. The service can only be secure through the application of rigorous policies at many levels in its implementation. We employ a wide range of security approaches to ensure the top level security possible is delivered to our clients. We maintain physical security on our multiple data centers through their being located in inconspicuous buildings with 24-7 manned security, CCTV-monitored data centers with biometric systems, and certified entry procedures.

We provide network security through the application of multiple layers of protection, including packet filters/ACLs, firewalls, and other techniques which are confidential.

All Workbooks systems are also carefully designed by a team of cloud and security experts with many years experience of delivering hosted solutions. We employ regularly third party expert penetration testing and are approved as part of the Governments G-Cloud program as a cloud provider to the public sector.

Why do you think it?s important for sales, marketing, customer service, etc. to be integrated? How does your software aid communication between these different groups?

Our belief is that CRM can not only bring these departments together, but finance as well.? Having one coherent view of a customer or prospective customer enables a business to better engage, service and deliver to their own and customers? expectations.

Workbooks enables all these groups to achieve such visibility and information easily and intuitively, and unlike other CRM systems, also brings information to the CRM view from and to a customer?s finance system, giving sales and admin the ability to quote, process orders and invoices all within the CRM interface.

What happens if the company grows? Can CRM systems grow with the business?

Sure, if a CRM solution is implemented well, users will use it. If they use it, its value grows as the customer profiles and information you store gains increasing value to your business. Hence new users joining will want and need access to the CRM. A cloud-based system makes adding these simple and quick as you can remotely enable the growth of users and not worry about locally having to take action on extra hardware performance, license purchasing and activations.

What questions should a company shopping for a new CRM system ask themselves before looking?

A business should ask and define the outcome they wish to achieve. Is it ?

  • Increased sales?
  • Improved efficiency?
  • Better reporting, shared information across the business?

We recommend putting together a needs and wants document across departments and delegating input from each area of the business. We provide customers an open requirements collection document that they can use to gather this information. This provides a starting point for engagement with any CRM vendor, as we feel this is a key fundamental first step on the journey to a successful CRM outcome.

What are the biggest mistakes a company makes when they?re shopping for a new system?

Implementing a CRM system for any sort of business is not without its challenges, but for small- and mid-sized companies without dedicated IT teams or budgets, it can be even more difficult.

In order for any CRM project to be a success, there needs to be clarity on what success actually looks like. We speak to many organizations that ?feel? they need a CRM system, but are not entirely sure what it could deliver and how it will benefit the business. We encourage these organizations to really consider what they are trying to achieve by investing in a CRM project and how their business might be different in six to 12 months with a successfully deployed solution.

CRM projects cost time and money and may demand a change in working practices. This means that for any CRM project to be successful, there must be the support from business leadership. We would recommend establishing a project team right from the outset which includes managers and users. We would also recommend you empower the user representatives to be ?project champions,? tasked with explaining to their colleagues why the CRM project is being started, what value it delivers to the business, and ensuring they get feedback on issues or concerns from their peers.

One of the most important factors for a business should be to understand how much focus and support you are likely to get from your CRM provider.

How can CRM software reduce operational costs?

CRM can help reduce costs in a multitude of ways, from providing visibility of earlier actions needed on a sales engagement to more effective working of renewals to better customer support information. In the Workbooks system, that means more effective cash collection and improved communication across all internal departments regarding customer matters.

How can it improve customer service?

CRM in itself does not improve customer service, but for the committed organization and team it can be a powerful tool that enables consistent interaction and communication with customers, and empowers actions to be taken at the right time.

For a salesperson contacting a client, knowing a customer has an open support call, hasn?t paid, or has made a complaint to another department can be a key decision-maker on the approach taken. For the business knowing that more sales are lost because of a specific function or lost to a common competitor can change the training sales gets or the tools provided to them.

Understanding what sort of customers buy quickest or renew the least can allow key decisions to be made.? Having a CRM that is intuitive to use ? meaning that users put data into it ? increases the value and information you can get out and drives increased use, thus becoming an upward positive spiral.

How has this software changed and/or improved in the past 5 years

The latest hype is Social CRM, ensuring customers? social media interactions are captured and such discussions are recorded. In reality, most small- to medium-sized companies need to get the fundamentals of a strong CRM outcome first, before running to the new world of Social CRM. You should ask is this a key for your business interactions with customers right now or is it overkill and is technology hype pushing a step too far, too soon.

Debate moderating: a thankless job

NEW YORK (AP) ? Beneath Bob Schieffer's Southern charm is the tough spine of someone used to dealing with politicians. The moderator of Monday's final presidential debate will need it, because it has been open season on the other journalists who have done that job this campaign.

Thanks to a bitter campaign rivalry, thriving partisan media outlets and the growth of social media, debate moderator is approaching baseball umpire on the scale of thankless jobs.

Jim Lehrer was criticized for not doing enough, Candy Crowley for doing too much and Martha Raddatz worked over about the wedding guest list for a marriage that ended more than a decade ago. Though not unanimously so, the barbs were usually partisan in nature.

"There are millions of people with their hands over their keyboards ready to analyze every single moment of what's happening," said veteran TV journalist Jeff Greenfield. "That puts even more pressure on ... It's a no-win situation."

Conservative columnist George Will called last week's get-together on Long Island the best presidential debate he's ever seen.

It didn't take long, however, for Republican Mitt Romney's supporters to go after CNN's Crowley. They said questions that she chose from undecided voters on immigration, gun control and equal pay for women played to President Barack Obama's strengths. They were incensed when Crowley, faced by two candidates in a dispute over what was said during a presidential address about Libya, corrected Romney by saying Obama had referred to an attack on Americans in Benghazi as an "act of terror." Crowley also noted that others in the administration suggested for nearly two weeks that the reaction to an anti-Muslim video was a motivating factor in the attack.

Radio host Rush Limbaugh called Crowley's work "an act of journalistic terror."

"If there were any journalistic standards, what she did last night would have been the equivalent of blowing up her career like a suicide bomber," he said.

The conservative Media Research Center criticized Crowley for having only one question on a foreign policy issue, even though this Monday's Schieffer-moderated debate is supposed to focus on foreign policy.

Thanks to a clock that airs on CNN's screen during the debate, some conservatives saw as a sign of bias that Obama spoke for 44 minutes, 4 seconds during the debate, compared to Romney's 40:50. This prompted CNN to count the actual words spoken by each candidate. The faster-talking Romney said 7,984 words and Obama 7,506.

Criticism of Crowley was a relentless post-debate topic on Fox News Channel, which knows CNN isn't popular among Republicans in its audience. Conservatives on Fox and liberals on MSNBC offer an echo chamber for partisan complaints and have far greater prominence than they had even a decade ago.

"I knew from the start," Crowley told The Associated Press, "somebody is going to be unhappy no matter what you do."

Crowley's bosses leapt to her defense: "She had to deal with the tricky format, the nervous questioners, the aggressive debaters, all while shutting out the pre-debate attempts to spin and intimidate her," CNN U.S. chief Mark Whitaker said in a memo to staff. "She pulled it off masterfully."

Even as each debate progresses, Twitter is crackling with reactions. Type in the moderator's name in a search and the screen immediately fills with tweets. Generally, it's a dependable way to gauge how a candidate is doing. The harsher one party's reaction to a moderator is, the tougher time their candidate is having onstage.

"I've never known the winning side to (complain)," said Aaron Brown, the former ABC and CNN anchor who is now a professor at Arizona State University.

Frustration against Lehrer boiled over predominantly among Democrats like Michael Moore and Rachel Maddow who were witnessing Obama's admittedly poor performance in the first debate. The former PBS host said he essentially tried to get out of the way, asking general questions and letting the candidates go after each other.

"I wondered if we needed a moderator since we had Mitt Romney," Obama's deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said, even though her candidate talked longer. As in the second debate, Romney spoke more words.

ABC's Raddatz generally received strong reviews for her work moderating the one debate between Vice President Joe Biden and challenger Paul Ryan. Conservative media was buzzing days before the event, however, with the story that future president Obama attended her 1991 wedding to Julius Genachowski, Obama's Harvard classmate. The couple divorced in 1999. Allusions to the wedding popped up in grumbling tweets by Republicans about Raddatz's questioning.

One motive of the pre- and post-debate criticism is to "work the refs," to let the moderators know that partisans are watching. If intimidation works, even on a subtle level, it can seep into their performances at a time when even modest advantages can make a big difference.

During the second debate, George Mason University went so far as to count how many times each candidate and Crowley interrupted one another. They found that Romney was interrupted 58 times and Obama 43. The numbers came with little context, however, so it wasn't clear how many interruptions were related to candidates exceeding agreed-upon time limits.

Crowley's role in the Libyan discussion also raised the issue of how much the moderators should be prepared to practice journalism while onstage. If you hear something factually incorrect or misleading, is it your duty to point it out to viewers, or is that strictly the candidates' job?

For most viewers, the answer no doubt has to do with which candidate is being corrected.

So let's get this moderator's job straight:

Craft sharp questions to get the candidates to talk, while being meticulously fair not to challenge one more than another. Keep an eye on the clock so one candidate doesn't get to hog the time. Don't be bullied; be firm in forcing the candidates to move on. But be flexible enough to keep a productive discussion flowing. Know the difference. Keep the focus off yourself. And do it all on live television before some 60 million people.

Any applicants?

"There is not enough money to get me to do one of these things," Brown said.

* Ancestry.com Inc said that it will be acquired by a group led by Europe-based private equity firm Permira in a $1.6 billion deal.

* European stocks pared early losses and turned slightly positive as renewed expectations that Spain was moving closer to seeking a bailout eclipsed worries over corporate results. <.eu/>

* Asian shares fell as lackluster earnings from leading U.S. companies and a sharp drop in Japan's exports, a key driver of the world's third-biggest economy, dented risk appetites and prompted investors to take profits on recent gains.

Obama accuses Romney of suffering from 'Romnesia'

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) ? President Barack Obama offered a mocking medical diagnosis Friday for what he considers rival Mitt Romney's bout with shifting positions: "Romnesia."

Making a direct gender-pitch in hotly contested Virginia, Obama told a crowd of women and college students that when it comes to issues important to women's health and jobs, Romney has conveniently overlooked his past stands.

"He's forgetting what his own positions are ? and he's betting that you will too," Obama told an audience of 9,000 at George Mason University. "I mean he's changing up so much and backtracking and sidestepping. We've got to name this condition that he's going through. I think it's called Romnesia."

Obama, a broad grin on his face, borrowed heavily from the style of comedian Jeff Foxworthy, known for his "you might be a redneck" standup routines. The comedy offered the president a warm-up of sorts before Monday's final presidential debate in Boca Raton, Fla.

"If you say you'll protect a woman's right to choose, but you stand up at a primary debate and said that you'd be 'delighted' to sign a law outlawing that right to choose in all cases, man, you've definitely got Romnesia," he said.

Riffing as if he were still delivering one-liners at Thursday night's Catholic charity dinner in New York, Obama said he had good news for anyone who suffers from Romnesia. "Obamacare covers pre-existing conditions," he bellowed. "We can fix you up. We've got a cure! We can make you well, Virginia. This is a curable disease," Obama said, pounding the podium.

Republicans said the exchange was steeped in irony, noting that then-candidate Obama said during a Virginia event in 2008 that voters "don't deserve a bunch of name-calling" or a "bunch of mud-slinging."

"Women haven't forgotten how we've suffered over the last four years in the Obama economy," said Republican Barbara Comstock, a member of Virginia's House of Delegates.

Obama renewed his criticism of Romney's economic plan, quoting a line in a New York Times column by economist Paul Krugman. "There's no jobs plan. There's just a snow job on the American people."

Obama added, "If he offered you that deal when he was in corporate finance, you wouldn't give him a dime." So why, Obama asked, would voters cast their ballots for him.

Obama's message was aimed at suburban women who form a formidable voting bloc in northern Virginia. The president raised once more Romney's comment during the second debate that he received "binders full of women" when he sought to diversify his cabinet as Massachusetts governor. "You don't want someone who needs to ask for binders of women. You don't want that guy," Obama said.

Obama wins the second debate. Too bad it?s not the one that mattered.

When the evening began, one observation dominated the conversation: ?If President Barack Obama has another debate like the last one, the election?s over.?

When the evening ended, I was struck by a different thought: If Obama had performed this way at the first debate, the election would have been over.

In every debate, whatever the format, whatever the questions, there is one and only one way to identify the winner: Who commands the room? Who drives the narrative? Who is in charge? More often than not on Tuesday night, I think, Obama had the better of it.

From a substantive view, there was one argument that the president was seeking to make over and over: Don?t let Mitt Romney fool you; he?s a rich guy out to protect the interests of the well-off, not the middle-class.

That?s why he referenced not just Romney?s tax plan, but Romney?s taxes, the fact that the Republican presidential nominee paid a lower rate on his millions than ordinary working-class folks do on theirs, the fact that Romney has invested heavily in China. And when Romney went at Obama with almost the exact same argument he used so devastatingly against Newt Gingrich??have you checked your pension???Obama came back with, ?I haven?t looked at my pension; it?s not as big as yours. (For super-wonks it harked back to a 1982 debate between Mario Cuomo and the super-wealthy Lew Lehrman, when Cuomo reached over, grabbed Lehrman?s hand, and said, ?Nice watch, Lou!?)

As a tactical matter, Obama executed one of the toughest of maneuvers: the counterpunch. When Romney attacked Obama for hindering the use of coal, the President recalled an appearance of Romney as governor of Massachusetts, where he vowed to shut down a coal-fired power plant. (The fact that Romney was probably right about the danger will be the subject of earnest substantive post-debate analyses that have no place here!)

And in talking about an area where the Obama administration has clear vulnerabilities?the attack on the American consulate in Libya?Obama summoned the inherent high ground of the presidency to condemn the ?politicization? of the attack.

To be clear: There was nothing particularly off about Romney. He had several strong moments, most especially contrasting what Obama said he would do in 2008 with what in fact had happened over the past four years. This was, and is, the single most powerful argument against returning Obama to the White House, and Romney deployed it effectively.

It?s just that Obama found what he could not find in Denver?a coherent thread to make the case that he understands the middle-class in a way Romney does not. For those Democratic partisans wondering where ?the 47 percent? argument was, Obama was saving it for the close which?because of a pre-debate coin flip?Romney could not answer. In this sense, it was like Reagan?s famous ?are you better off?? question from 1980.

In a larger sense, however, Obama?s success is unlikely to have anything like the impact of that 1980 debate, nor will it likely alter the terrain of the campaign as the first debate of 2012 did. Had the Obama of this debate showed up two weeks ago, he might well have ended Romney?s effort to present himself as a credible alternative to the president.

That opportunity vanished that night. While it?s clear that Obama?s performance will revive the enthusiasm of his supporters, it seems unlikely that it will cause those impressed by Romney to reconsider. Like they say in show business, timing is everything.

The Gerontological Society of America

"Communicating With Older Adults: An Evidence-Based Review of What Really Works," the latest report from The Gerontological Society of America (GSA), provides 40 pages of recommended guidelines for health care providers interacting with the fastest growing age segment of America's population.

This publication is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, biologists, psychologists, social workers, caregivers, economists, and health policy experts anyone who seeks to have the best possible interactions with older patients. It was developed by GSA and supported by McNeil Consumer Healthcare.

"The report is based in the scientific literature, yet the contributors created something extremely accessible," said Jake Harwood, PhD, head of the Advisory Board that crafted the report. "It covers the full range of communication issues experienced by older adults and health care providers, and gives concrete suggestions for dealing with problems when they arise."

The U.S. Administration on Aging forecasts that nearly one in five Americans will be 65 or older by 2030. At present, those age 65 and above make nearly twice as many physician office visits per year as do adults 45 to 65. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two-thirds of older people are unable to understand the information given to them about their prescription medications.

The report provides 29 specific recommendations in four categories: general tips for improving interactions with older adults, general tips for improving face-to-face communication with older adults, tips for optimizing interactions between health care professionals and older patients, and tips for communicating with older adults with dementia.

The recommendations were contributed by experts in the fields of gerontology and communications. Each is accompanied by a brief explanation of the rationale, tips for implementing the recommendation in busy health care settings, and selected references for further reading. The objective is to encourage behaviors that consider the unique abilities and challenges of older adult patients and produce positive, effective interactions among everyone involved.

"The report distills a large body of empirical research findings and scholarship from several disciplines into a set of concrete recommendations for effective communication with older adults," said Advisory Board member Daniel G. Morrow, PhD. "The recommendations include nonverbal and verbal strategies that are often grounded in compelling examples that involve common communication challenges."

Among the specific steps outlined in the report, care providers are encouraged to avoid speech that might be seen as patronizing to an older person, verify listener comprehension during a conversation, and pay close attention to sentence structure when conveying critical information.

"This resource will be of great benefit to health care providers, and would also make good reading for older adults. Increasing awareness of some of these issues among the older population could help them seek more appropriate accommodation when needed," Harwood said.

GSA will distribute the report to its own members, as well as members of the American Geriatrics Society, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers.

"While focused on older adults, the recommendations are relevant to communication across the lifespan," Morrow said.

###

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is the nation's oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. The principal mission of the Society and its 5,400+ members is to advance the study of aging and disseminate information among scientists, decision makers, and the general public. GSA's structure also includes a policy institute, the National Academy on an Aging Society, and an educational branch, the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.

Armenian plane en route to Syria searched in Turkey

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey ordered an Armenian plane flying to the Syrian city of Aleppo to land and searched its cargo on Monday, in the latest move to prevent its airspace being used to supply the Syrian military.

The plane was allowed to continue on its way after the search in the eastern Turkish city of Erzurum confirmed it was carrying humanitarian aid as stated by Armenian officials, a Turkish deputy prime minister said.

Last Wednesday Turkey forced down a Syrian airliner that had come from Moscow, and said it had found Russian munitions on board destined for Syria's armed forces.

NATO-member Turkey has become increasingly assertive in challenging Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the face of growing tensions along the border and banned all Syrian aircraft from its airspace in the wake of that incident.

"The plane was ordered to land and it was inspected. It was clear that the declaration was correct and the plane was given permission to take off," Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told reporters.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Turkey had the sovereign right under the Chicago convention on civil aviation to require planes crossing its airspace to make a "technical landing" but did not say whether this right would be exercised in future.

Armenia confirmed it had known the plane would be searched.

"The landing of the airplane in Turkey was planned and it was carried out according to a previously reached agreement. The airplane is delivering humanitarian aid to Syria," Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Tigran Balayan said.

Last week's decision to force down and search the Syrian plane travelling from Russia infuriated Moscow and Damascus.

Russia has said there were no weapons on the plane and that it was carrying a legal cargo of radar equipment. But Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later said the incident would not hurt the countries' "solid" relations.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said at the weekend that Turkish airspace had been closed to Syrian planes. Syria has also banned Turkish planes from flying over its territory.

The confrontation between Turkey and Syria has escalated in the last two weeks because of cross-border shelling, with Ankara retaliating after five Turkish civilians were killed when a Syrian shell hit a Turkish border town.

The bloodshed inside Syria has worsened markedly in the past two months although neither government nor rebels have been able to gain a decisive advantage.

The increased conflict has fuelled further refugee flows across Syria's borders, with many fleeing to Turkey.

The Turkish disaster management agency (AFAD) said on Monday there were now 100,363 Syrians at more than a dozen camps.

Turkey has said it will struggle to accommodate more than 100,000 and has urged the United Nations to build refugee camps in a safe zone within Syria's borders.
