Ziphius aquatic drone hits Kickstarter, we go hands-on with an updated prototype

If you followed our Insert Coin: New Challengers contest at our first-ever Expand event, you may recognize this guy. The Ziphius, an WiFi-enabled aquatic drone powered by a Raspberry Pi, won $25,000 in prize money back in San Francisco, and three months later it's taking the next big plunge: launching on Kickstarter. The bot launched its crowd-funding campaign tonight -- at Engadget+ gdgt live in NYC, no less -- and the Ziphius team says the $125,000 in requested money will go toward refining the device's mold for the final-production version. As you can see from our gallery below, the package already looks sleeker, and it comes in pink along with several other new colors. Backers of all pocket sizes will be rewarded with everything from their name on the website ($1 pledge) to a Ziphius of their own ($195 and up). Click the source to check out the Kickstarter page for yourself and donate if you're so inclined; the project has 29 days to meet that lofty funding goal.

Babies know when a cuddle is coming

June 25, 2013 ? Babies as young as two months know when they are about to be picked up and change their body posture in preparation, according to new research.

Professor Vasu Reddy, of the University of Portsmouth, has found most babies aged two to four months understand they are about to be picked up the moment their mothers come towards them with their arms outstretched and that they make their bodies go still and stiff in anticipation, making it easier to be picked up.

This is the first study to examine how babies adjust their posture in anticipation to offset the potentially destabilising effect of being picked up.

Professor Reddy said: "We didn't expect such clear results. From these findings we predict this awareness is likely to be found even earlier, possibly not long after birth.

"The results suggest we need to re-think the way we study infant development because infants seem to be able to understand other people's actions directed towards them earlier than previously thought. Experiments where infants are observers of others' actions may not give us a full picture of their anticipatory abilities."

The findings could also be used as an early indicator of some developmental problems, including autism. It was reported by researchers in 1943 that children with autism don't appear to make preparatory adjustments to being picked up.

The researchers, who included Dr Gabriela Markova of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, and Dr Sebastian Wallot of the University of Aarhus, did two studies, one on 18 babies aged three months, and a second on ten babies aged two to four months old.

In both, babies were placed on a pressure mat which measured their postural adjustments during three phases: As their mothers chatted with their babies; as the mothers opened their arms to pick them up; and as the babies were picked up.

The results revealed infants as young as two months made specific adjustments when their mother stretched her arms out to pick them up. These included extending and stiffening the legs which increases body rigidity and stability, and widening or raising their arms, which helps to create a space for the mother to hold the infant's chest.

Between two and three months of age the babies' gaze moved from mostly looking at their mother's face to often looking at her hands as she stretched her arms out towards them.

The results reveal two important findings -- first, that from as early as two months babies make specific postural adjustments to make it easier to pick them up even before their mother touches them. And second, it appears that babies learn to increase the smoothness and coordination of their movements between two and four months, rather than develop new types of adjustment.

"In other words, they rapidly become more adept at making it easier for parents to pick them up," Professor Reddy said.

The mothers in the study were asked about their babies' physical responses before the tests and some reported their babies stiffened their legs or raised their arms in preparation for being picked up, but video footage watched frame by frame revealed physical adjustments happened to a greater degree and more subtly than mothers had noticed.

The researchers suggest more research now needs to be done to examine the extent to which infants discriminate between different kinds of actions directed at them, between familiar and unfamiliar actions, and how infant anticipation of these actions is influenced by the different maternal styles they each experience.

The research is published in the latest issue of the journal Plos One.

Gunmen kill 11 foreign tourists in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Gunmen killed 11 foreign tourists before dawn Sunday as they were visiting one of the world's highest mountains in a remote area of northern Pakistan, police said.

The tourists from Russia, China and the Ukraine were shot dead at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world, said local police chief Barkat Ali. It's unclear if they were planning to climb the mountain or were just visiting the base camp, which is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

The police chief learned about the attack when the tourists' local guide called the police station around 1 a.m. local time on Sunday, said Ali.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan is home to several insurgencies and internal conflicts but Gilgit-Baltistan is generally a peaceful area, although it has experienced some sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in recent years. The area is a popular destination for tourists because it includes a large number of very tall mountains in the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges, including K2, the second highest mountain in the world.

'Supermoon' lights up night sky

The night sky has been illuminated by what appears to be a much bigger and brighter Moon.

The so-called "supermoon" occurs when the Moon reaches its closest point to earth, known as a perigee full moon.

The effect makes the Moon seem 14% bigger and 30% brighter than when it is furthest from the planet.

Skywatchers who miss the phenomenon this weekend because of cloudy skies will have to wait until August 2014 for the next one.

Space expert Heather Couper said "supermoons" were the result of coincidence.

"The Moon goes round in an oval orbit so it can come very close to us, and if that coincides with a full moon, then it can look absolutely enormous," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

She explained that when the Moon was high in the sky, it looked normal.

But as it got closer to the horizon, a "kind of optical illusion" occurred where it looked bigger when compared with trees or houses, she said.

She suggested it might be possible to dispel the illusion by turning away from the Moon, bending over and looking at the sky from between your legs.

Writing in Sky and Telescope about the "myth of the supermoon", Shari Balouchi said much of what we called the supermoon was just our eyes playing tricks on us.

"The supermoon might look bigger than normal if you see it in the evening when the Moon's just rising, but the real size difference isn't big enough to notice."

BBC Weather's Darren Bett said he was confident most people in the UK would have been able to see the Moon at some point on Saturday night, even if only fleetingly.

Sunday night should be better, he added, with people in south-west England and south Wales likely to have the clearest views of the Moon.

However Marek Kukula, public astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, said people should not expect the supermoon to look that much bigger than normal.

"It won't fill the sky," he said.

"It's at its most impressive when the Moon is close to the horizon, ie when it's rising or setting - people will need to check online for rising and setting times for their locality."

Dr Kukula said the US Naval Observatory and HM Nautical Almanac Office had online tools for checking the moon's rising and setting times.

Scientists have dismissed the idea that the perigee can cause strange behaviour, like lycanthropy or natural disasters.

Dr Couper said the tides this weekend would be unaffected.

Funeral plans set for actor James Gandolfini

NEW YORK (AP) ? Funeral services for actor James Gandolfini will be Thursday at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City.

An HBO spokeswoman speaking on behalf of the family says the funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m.

The 51-year-old star of "The Sopranos" died Wednesday in Rome. Family spokesman Michael Kobold says Gandolfini died of a heart attack.

The Italian news agency ANSA reports Gandolfini's body departed Rome for the United States on Sunday. Kobold earlier told reporters the "provisional plan" was to repatriate Gandolfini's body Monday.

The actor had been headed to Sicily to appear at the Taormina Film Festival, which paid tribute to him Saturday.

Glenn Greenwald Spars with David Gregory

Glenn Greenwald and David Gregory got into a bit of a row on NBC's Meet the Press after Gregory asked whether Greenwald should maybe be prosecuted for?"aiding and abetting"?National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. Surprisingly, Greenwald did not appreciate being called a criminal by a fellow journalist! "I think it?s pretty extraordinary that anybody who would call themselves a journalist would publicly muse about whether or not other journalists should be charged with felonies," he said. Greenwald said "the assumption" he did anything to help Snowden, besides act as the vessel for his classified leaks, "completely without evidence." Greenwald cited the Justice Department investigations of the Associated Press and Fox News as evidence the administration is trying to "criminalize investigative journalism" and accusing reporters of "being co-conspirator in felonies for working with sources." But Greenwald wasn't done there: "If you want to embrace that theory it means that every investigative journalist in the United States who works with their sources, who receives classified information, is a criminal." Gregory responded to Greenwald's dressing down by questioning whether or not he counts as a journalist. "The question of who's a journalist may be up to a debate with regard to what you're doing," he said, before adding that he was just "asking a question that has been raised by lawmakers," and "not embracing anything." Fun times!?

Aiding and abetting were the words of the day, apparently, as Sen. Chuck Schumer fired a similar accusation towards Russian president Vladimir Putin during his appearance on CNN's State of the Union. It seems Schumer doesn't think Putin's been a great friend recently. "The bottom line is very simple: allies are supposed to treat each other in decent ways and Putin always seems almost eager to put a finger in the eye of the United States, whether it is Syria, Iran and now of course with Snowden," Schumer said. "That's not how allies should treat each other and I think it will have serious consequences for the United States-Russia relationship." Schumer said Putin had to be aware of Snowden's movement plans and accused him of aiding and abetting the fugitive.?"The fact that [Russian officials] allowed him to land, indicates that we are not in a place of cooperation," Schumer said.?

RELATED: Lindsey Graham and Hagel Make Nice (For Now)

Sen. Lindsay Graham said he hopes the U.S. chases Edward Snowden to "the ends of the earth" during his appearance on Fox News Sunday. "I believe he hurt our nation," Graham said. ?"He compromised our national security program. The freedom trail is not exactly China-Russia-Cuba-Venezuela, so I hope we?ll chase him to the ends of the Earth, bring him to justice and let the Russians know there?ll be consequences if they harbor this guy." Snowden was the topic of the morning, but Graham was originally booked to talk about the bipartisan immigration deal currently facing the Senate. "I think we?re on the verge of getting 70 votes ... We?re very, very close to getting 70 votes," Graham said hopefully. The South Carolina Senator said the border was sufficient and the terms of the bill are something both sides can agree on. But, more importantly, if this bill fails it could be fatal for the Republican party. "If it fails and we are blamed for its failure, we're in trouble as a party," he said. "We need to grow this party."

RELATED: NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre Still Thinks Guns Aren't the Problem

Sen. Rand Paul cautioned Edward Snowden against getting close with China and Russia. "I do think for Mr. Snowden, if he cozies up to the Russian government, it will be nothing but bad for his name in history,"?Paul told Candy Crowley on CNN's State of the Union. "If he goes to an independent third country like Iceland and if he refuses to talk to any sort of formal government about this, I think there's a chance he'll be seen as an advocate of privacy. If he cozies up to either the Russian government, Chinese government or any of these governments perceived still as enemies of ours, I think that will be a real problem for him in history." Paul, who has defended Snowden in the past, was reacting to the news Snowden had flew to Russia Sunday morning. He also mentioned during his appearance that he will not be supporting the bipartisan immigration reform bill. "I'm all in favor of immigration reform but I'm like most conservatives in the country, that I think reform should be dependent on border security first," he said. "So I introduced an amendment that would have done just that, border security first and then immigration reform with congressional checks on whether that?s occurring. That wasn?t voted on favorably and so, without some congressional authority, without border security first, I can't support the final bill." Paul also seems to think the House won't support the immigration bill despite strong urges from their Republican counterparts in the Senate. "The House is much closer to me, and I think they think border security has to come first, before you get immigration reform," he said.

Gen. Keith Alexander said he didn't believe Snowden is acting "with noble intent" during his interview on ABC's This Week. Alexander was asked whether he understood why alarms didn't sound whenever Snowden left the country for Hong Kong. "No, I don't," Alexander said. "It's clearly an individual who's betrayed the trust and confidence we had in him.?This is an individual who is not acting, in my opinion, with noble intent." Alexander said they're going to keep an eye on people who performed the same duties Snowden had when he still worked as an NSA contractor. "We are now putting in place actions that would give us the ability to track our system administrators, what they're doing, what they're taking, a two-man rule," he said. "We've changed the passwords.? But at the end of the day, we have to trust that our people are going to do the right thing.? This is an extremely important mission defending our country."

UK regulator orders Google to delete private data

(AP) ? Britain's data regulator has ordered Google to delete personal data scooped up in its Street View project ? or face contempt of court.

The Information Commissioner's Office on Friday served Google Inc. with an enforcement notice. Google now has 35 days to kill material hoovered up in the project that featured camera-toting vehicles shooting images of the world's streets.

To make sense of the pictures, Google had to be able to precisely place where the properties being photographed were located. Using a computer program, the vehicles taking the images used local Wi-Fi outlets to place the properties, and in doing so, collected data from the Wi-Fi networks.

Google promised to destroy the data but found a cache of the material was found last year. It pledged again it would comply.

Instagram steals a page from Vine, rolls out video

Facebook and Instagram are launching a 15-second video function for the popular photo sharing site.?

By Matthew Shaer / June 21, 2013

Instagram is rolling out a Vine-like video function.

Instagram/Facebook

A few days ago, rumors started to percolate about some sort of Vine-like video option for Instagram. Today, the scuttlebutt was proved correct: Instagram, which is owned by social networking titan Facebook, has taken the wraps off a 15-second video function, which will be integrated into the photo-sharing platform.?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

"This is the same Instagram we all know and love but it moves," Instagram founder Kevin Systrom said at a press event in Menlo Park. Users will be able to access the video mode via a special icon in the Instagram interface. There's also a "cinema" stabilization feature and a set of thirteen specialty features, including black and white and multi-hued lenses. ?

According to the Associated Press, Twitter's Vine, which launched earlier this year, has approximately 13 million users. By comparison, Instagram has approximately 100 million users.?

"So what does this mean for your content? Nothing?s different from photos," Mr. Systrom wrote today in a post on the Instagram blog. "We?re still committed to making sure you have control over all of your content. Only the people who you let see your photos will be able to see your videos. And as with photos, you own your videos."?

(It's worth noting that shortly after launch, Vine was flooded with pornography; in an effort to crack down on the problem, Twitter began requiring users to confirm that they were 17 or older.)?

Of course, as Sam Biddle of Valleywag notes today, the video function is about far more than convenience for users. It's also about selling ads ? and a couple companies, including Burberry and Lululemon are already employing the platform to tout their products.?

"This is how Facebook starts to recoup that billion dollar price tag," Biddle writes. "Maybe. Of course, this is only an annoyance if you're choosing to 'follow' companies on Instagram in the first place. For now?it's easy to imagine inspirational yoga pants clips being stuck into your feed, a la Facebook."

Massachusetts State Police dig for evidence Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the sight in an industrial park in North Attleborough, Mass., where the body of Odin Lloyd, of Boston, was found earlier this week. (AP) ? Family members of the man found slain a mile from New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez's house said Friday they are looking for answers about what happened the night he died.

Police have searched in and around Hernandez's sprawling home in North Attleborough, not far from where the Patriots practice. The Bristol County District Attorney has not released any information, other than saying the death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd is being treated as a homicide.

A jogger found Lloyd's body in an industrial park Monday. Family members said Friday that Lloyd was dating the sister of Hernandez's girlfriend and the two men were friends who were together at some point the night that Lloyd died.

Family members have said Lloyd, a semi-pro football player, was never in trouble and that many things are puzzling about the case. But they also said Friday that they can see progress in the investigation.

"I want the person that killed my son to be brought to justice," said Lloyd's mother, Ursula Ward. "That's my first-born child, my only boy child, and they took him away from me. ... I wouldn't trade him for all the money in the world. And if money could bring him back I would give this house up to bring my son back. Nothing can bring my son back."

Hernandez attorney Michael Fee has acknowledged media reports about the state police search of his client's home but says he wouldn't have any comment on it.

Mark E. Sturdy, clerk magistrate of Attleboro District Court, said three search warrants were issued in the investigation earlier in the week, but they have not yet been returned, meaning they're not public. He said no arrest warrants had been filed in state courts as of Friday morning.

Media have been camped out for several days at Hernandez's home, near the Rhode Island state line. A news helicopter followed along Thursday as Hernandez drove in a white SUV from his home to the Patriots' stadium, then got out and went inside.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James said the team had no comment on why Hernandez was there. He said earlier that the team did not anticipate commenting publicly during the police investigation. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is waiting for the legal process to take its course.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp. Last summer, the Patriots gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.

Hernandez said after he was drafted that he had failed a drug test while with the Gators and had been upfront with NFL teams about the issue.

Earlier this week, a 30-year-old man filed a lawsuit in South Florida claiming Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued at a strip club.

Alexander Bradley's lawsuit accuses Hernandez of negligence, among other things, suggesting that the shooting may have been accidental. Bradley said he lost his right eye and suffers many other lingering effects from the shooting.

Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, said Friday that investigators would need to speak directly with Bradley in order to move forward with a criminal investigation and cannot rely on the claims he made in his lawsuit. She said Bradley repeatedly refused to cooperate in the criminal probe after he was shot in February, telling detectives he didn't know who shot him.

"If he contacts us, we would move forward with the investigation," Barbera said. "He needs to reach out to us and he has not done so."

Hernandez's attorney did not respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.
