Opponents plan legal, economic challenge to immigration law | al.com

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Opponents of Alabama's stringent immigration law?said their next phase of attack?will include a new legal challenge and a "public education" campaign targeting the state's tourism and auto industries.

Wade Henderson, CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said that, since efforts to appeal to lawmakers have been met with indifference, groups are attempting to up the ante in their effort to get the law repealed or greatly modified.

"Our message to the Legislature is simple. If we can't appeal to your humanity, we then will appeal to your pocketbooks," Henderson said in a conference call with reporters.

Participants in the call included representatives from the Southern Poverty Law Center and the United Auto Workers. Lawmakers this month approved revisions to the state's immigration law instead of repealing it as opponents wanted.?

Henderson said there will be "targeted advertising" to discourage tourists and groups from choosing Alabama for their vacations and conferences

"Alabama is not a state at this time that is worthy ... of your contributions and support," Henderson said.

Henderson said the actions are not a boycott against the state.

"However, we strongly believe only through a gradual escalation of pressure on key economic sectors of Alabama can we achieve the policy changes our coalition and most Alabama citizens would support,"?? Henderson said.

Cindy Estrada, a national vice president for the United Auto Workers, said they will display banners and leaflets outside 70 Hyundai dealerships around the country "to let Hyundai's customers know that they did not stand against HB 56 or HB658 and by its silence it endorses a law that hurts its large and loyal Latino customer base."

Estrada said the group will not be picketing the dealerships. ?However, Estrada said the slogans that will be displayed on banners outside dealerships include, "Stand Up Against Hate."

Estrada said they hope to convince Hyundai and other businesses to join them in calling for the law's repeal.

Mary Bauer, legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center, said she anticipates a legal challenge against one of the new provisions of the state's immigration law. ?Lawmakers added a provision this year that requires the Department of Homeland Security to post a quarterly report? of suspected undocumented immigrants who have appeared in court for any reason and the outcome of their cases.

"That provision is nothing more than an attempt to bully and intimidate people and it will encourage vigilantism," Bauer said.?

Bauer has called the provision a "Scarlet Letter" list.?

Gov. Robert Bentley signed the immigration revisions into law this month. A Bentley spokeswoman called the groups' efforts "misguided.?

"Alabama's immigration law seeks to ensure that those who live and work in the state do so legally. There is nothing unkind or unjust about that. It is misguided for anyone to advocate boycotting Alabama simply because the state has taken action to ensure that federal immigration laws are upheld. Some people want us to turn a blind eye to the issue of illegal immigration. We will not do so," Bentley Press Secretary?Jennifer Ardis said.?

First available 4K movie would look great on the world?s first home 4K projector

Move over, HD: 4K is the new hotness in townWhen one says high-definition display, you probably still think 720p or 1080p. But there's another contender that delivers even crisper, clearer, and more life-like images: 4K displays, which have four times the resolution of 1080p screens. This fairly new technology hasn't yet caught on, and 4K hardware and content are only barely starting to pop up. Take for example Sony's first 4K home theater projector ? announced last year and showcased at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), it's now available for purchase by anyone willing to plunk down $26,000 for it.

Tecca had some eyes-on time with the technology at CES, and in a side-by-side comparison with a 1080p display, we can say 4K comes out on top. On a small screen, however, 4K doesn't make a difference. The bigger the screen is, the more you'll appreciate this pixel-rich display technology, and the resolution shines even more when the images and videos are projected at large viewing size.

Sony's first 4k Home Movie Projector
Right now, though, high-definition content that can take advantage of 4K displays are quite rare. Peter Jackson made a splash by filming The Hobbit in 5K resolution?? the film was criticized for being too life-like?? but it will take a while before you can get a copy of it for a home screening with family and friends.

YouTube has 4K viewing enabled, but every clip will take a while for you to load because files are obviously huge, similar to the size of TimeScapes: the first 4K movie you can download. TimeScapes, a timelapse cinematography of the American South West, is available in 1080p format on iTunes and 1440p format on?its website. But if you happen to have a 4K TV or if the $26,000 Sony projector is within your budget, you can also get it in 4K format for $299.95 sent to you as a 140GB file saved on a portable hard drive.

AUGUSTA, Ga. Nearly 40 percent of the small adrenal tumors that cause big problems with high blood pressure share a genetic mutation that causes patients to retain too much sodium, researchers report.

The study of 47 human, benign adrenal gland tumors also showed a mutation of the gene KCNJ5 is twice as likely to occur in women 71 versus 29 percent as it points to potential new treatments for some patients who don't respond to current hypertension regimens, said Dr. William E. Rainey, Scientific Director of the Adrenal Center at Georgia Health Sciences University.

Addititionally, when scientists put the mutated gene into an adrenal cell, it immediately starts producing the sodium-retaining hormone aldosterone. "We found it turned on a whole series of genes that cause the cell to produce aldosterone," Rainey said.

Typically, KCNJ5 appears to help normalize levels of the sodium-retaining hormone aldosterone by regulating how much potassium is pumped in and out of aldosterone-producing cells on the outer layer of the adrenal glands. Abnormal protein produced by the mutated gene alters the cells' electrical status.

"When this gene has a mutation, the cells lose control and just start producing aldosterone all the time," said Rainey, corresponding author of the study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

"The combination of too much salt and too much of this hormone leads to high blood pressure and tissue damage," said Rainey. He notes that the vast majority of the 311 million Americans consume too much salt, even if they never pick up a salt shaker, because of high content in breads, processed and fast foods and the like. An estimated 33 percent of Americans are hypertensive and an estimated 1 in 10 have adrenal problems as the cause.

A 2011 study led by Yale University and published in the journal Science showed that the tumors had a KCNJ5 mutation. GHSU researchers, along with colleagues at University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor; University of Torino and University of Padova, Italy; University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas; and Keio University,Tokyo linked the gene to aldosterone production.

Now the GHSU Adrenal Center is moving forward with studies to determine why women with adrenal tumors have more of the mutated gene Rainey suspects it's estrogen-related. They also want to know if any of the dozen potassium channel inhibitors already on the market for heart and other disorders can help these patients as well.

Rainey said the gene mutation is one that occurs after birth when most mutations occur and the cause is unknown. About half the people who produce too much aldosterone have tumors, which tend to affect only one of the 2-by-1-inch glands that sit like hats on top of the two kidneys and surgical removal typically fixes their problem. Unexplained enlargement of both glands likely also has a genetic basis and may be medically managed, Rainey said.

One of the many goals of the GHSU Adrenal Center, one of a handful of multidisciplinary centers in the nation, is to better define genes which can result in whole families being impacted. To date, only three genes are known to contribute to the familial form. Aldosterone excess, by whatever means, also is suspected when people under age 40 become hypertensive for no other obvious reason.

The adrenals are extremly efficient glands, producing three additional hormone groups that help maintain homeostasis including cortisol needed for glucose/carbohydrate metabolism, weak sex steroids that likely are the major source of androgens, or male hormones, in women; and the fight or flight hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine. In the event both glands are removed, the vital hormones must be supplemented, Rainey said.

Patients typically come to the GHSU Adrenal Center with unexplained hypertension that isn't responding to traditional therapy. "They are typically on three or four medications and their blood pressure is still not under control," said Dr. Michael A. Edwards, Clinical Director of the Adrenal Center and Chief of the MCG Section of Minimally Invasive and Digestive Diseases Surgery. Computerized tomography done for other reasons can detect over-sized glands or tumors that may be the culprit.

UPDATE: Cox Communications to Launch Home Automation - CE Pro

UPDATE following the story: Cox is using the ZigBee-enabled platform that iControl acquired from uControl.

Add Cox Communications to the growing list of cable companies and other service providers who are getting into the home automation and home security business.

First came Comcast/Xfinity Home (formerly Comcast Home Security), then Verizon Home Monitoring and Control, Time Warner Cable and AT&T Digital Life.

CE Pro came across a job description for a vice president, Cox Smart Home Business.

The new executive:

Leads the start-up and scaling of Cox Smart Home business portfolio, including Home Security, Smart Energy, and other potential new managed services that can be offered from the underlying Smart Home platform. As the leader of this new business, the incumbent would be responsible for operating efficiency, market penetration, and financial performance of this new business relative to the business plan.

Judging from the job description, Cox will start out with security and then add energy management and other home-control applications:

?Starting with Home Security, [the VP] builds a roadmap of services (e.g., Smart Energy, Control and Automation) to scale this portfolio to meet or exceed the business plan.?

RELATED: Don?t Trust the Research on Home Automation

Cox then plans to take its new home control platform into ?smart ?office? services.?

The new VP will work out of Cox offices in Atlanta.

Will Cox employ a home automation platform from iControl, Motorola Mobility 4Home? Acquire some platform provider like MiOS (as AT&T did with Xanboo)? Or start from scratch?

We're checking it out ...

UPDATE:
image
Photo: East Valley Tribune
Judging from the images, Cox Communications is using a ZigBee-enabled self-contained security/automation system from iControl (which acquired the platform from uControl). It is the same solution that is employed by the other cable providers, but not ADT Pulse. The platform is now called OpenHome Converge.

ADT is using iControl's original Z-wave-based platform that utilizes a security system from Interlogix (formerly GE Security) and Honeywell. That platform is called OpenHome Connect.

Compare the two architectures here for original iControl and the new platform acquired from uControl. Please note that the products pictured in the illustration have changed somewhat but the architecture is basically the same.

The East Valley Tribune reports that Cox launched its home security product into the Metro Phoenix market about one month ago, but it's not clear what features have been available. In the pictures, only the traditional alarm functionality is shown on the interface, not the home automation feature set.

The iControl system enables remote monitoring and control of lights, thermostats, surveillance cameras, alarm system and other typical smart-home subsystems.

Erik Evans is Cox's home security project manager and he says that remote access is "what sets it [Cox system] apart from other systems."

Well, not exactly, since virtually all decent home control and security systems offer such a feature.

We located the Cox Home Security landing page, and indeed the company currently is only utilizing iControl's security capabilities. Cox's pricing starts at $99 for a basic security installation (two door/window sensors, one motion detector and a touchscreen interface), with a mandatory three-year contract of $29.99 per month without cameras and $39.99 per month with cameras. That rate applies only to existing Cox customers.

Stay tuned for more!

Mercedes-Benz Classic at Goodwood Festival of Speed | For repair ...

Mercedes-Benz Classic is sending four racing cars from the company?s collection to take part in the 1.86 kilometre Hillclimb at the largest motorised garden party in the world, the Goodwood Festival of Speed (28 June-1 July 2)

Under the slogan: ?Young Guns-Born to Win?, the former WWII airfield on the Sussex Downs estate of countless Dukes of Richmond will host exhibits ranging from F1 and classics to bikes and aeroplanes, plus a huge pop concert that together attracts over 150,000 fans.

The Mercedes-Benz W 125, which was constructed for the 1937 season, is a reminder of the early successes of the ?Silver Arrows?. As the ancestor of the SL-series, the 300?SL racing car (W?194) from 1952 marks the start of an era.

The 1963 tail fin saloon 220 S (W 111) which has been reconstructed for use as a racing car at historical motorsport events on race circuits will be making its debut at Goodwood alongside a 1997 CLK-GTR with about 600hp, representing more recent motorsport history.

As festival tradition demands, Merc racing cars will be driven on the Hillclimb by well known drivers such as Paul Stewart, Klaus Ludwig, Jochen Mass and Bernd Schneider.

The Festival of Speed was first held in 1993 and was invented by Charles Gordon-Lennox, Earl of March and Kinrara an active and enthusiastic car racing fan and host at Goodwood who traditionally is addressed as Lord March.

The foundation stone for the festival was already laid by his grandfather, the then Earl of March and 9th Duke of Richmond, was well known in England as the car designer, engineer and racing driver Freddie March, who in 1936 organised a private hill climb in the park of Goodwood House.

Strollers and automotive fascination

The Festival of Speed is not only a fascinating experience as a motorsport event; it is also an elegant promenade along automotive cultural highlights. From the pits, open to all visitors, to the car shows in the park grounds up to the automotive works of art which the British sculptor Gerry Judah creates anew every year. His temporary sculptures placed directly in front of Goodwood House always focus on one brand and its special vehicles.

The Mercedes-Benz Classics at Goodwood are:

W?125, 1937?- In 1937, Daimler-Benz introduced a completely new racing car, the W?125 the backbone of which was a sturdy nickel-chrome-molybdenum steel frame with four cross members. The torsional strength of the vehicle without its engine increased to three times that of its predecessor, the W?25. The W?125 was the first racing car from Daimler-Benz where the compressor was installed after the carburettor, which meant that the final mixture was compressed. The Silver Arrow was fitted out differently depending on the racing circuit with tank capacity, carburettor, supercharger, tyres and rim size, tyre profile and its overall dimensions varied from race to race. Construction year: 1937; Cylinders: R8; Cubic capacity: 5660cc; Output: 600hp (441kW); Top speed: over 300km/h.

300?SL (W?194) 1952 -?In 1951, work began at Daimler-Benz on the construction of a three-litre sports car with an aluminium body and by the following year a prototype of the Mercedes-Benz 300?SL, originally designed purely for racing, was presented to the press. It was the forerunner of the legendary 300?SL (W?198) ?gull wing? coup?.?The complex tubular frame construction of the 300?SL originally did not allow conventional doors to be installed. Because of this, experimental engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut envisaged winged doors in the first prototypes they are only small hatches reaching down to the bottom edge of the side windows. It was only the sixth of the ten original 300 SL that was fitted with larger doors extending downwards to the mid-flanks in keeping with the Le Mans regulations.?In its first race, the Mille Miglia in 1952, the 300?SL achieved a noteworthy second place. In the same year, it succeeded in coming in first and second in the more than 3,000?kilometre long Carrera Panamericana in Mexico and it celebrated a brilliant double victory in Le Mans.?The 300 SL entered in the same year for the Hillclimb at Goodwood is now owned by the McCaw family in the USA and is the original vehicle that won Le Mans in 1952.?Construction year: 1952; Cylinders: R6; Cubic capacity: 2995cc; Output: 170hp (125 kW);?Top speed: about 240km/h.

220 SE (W?111) 1963?- At the beginning of the 1960s, Mercedes was very active, especially with ?tail fin? saloons with six-cylinder engines (220?SE and 300?SE) and these served as models for the construction of the Mercedes-Benz 220?SE (W?111) used at Goodwood. During this period, competition vehicles and production models were technically very close to each other with the most common modifications involving making the chassis elements and parts of the body more rigid, increasing the tank capacity and adapting engine characteristics to the intended use. The light grey ?tail fin? car dates back to 1963 and was remodelled last year as a racing circuit car at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre for historical motorsport events. Construction year: 1963; Cylinders: R6; Cubic capacity: 2195cc; Output: 120hp (88kW); Top speed: about 170km/h.

CLK-GTR, 1997?- The Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR is a racing touring car developed in cooperation with AMG for the FIA GT championships founded in 1997. The CLK-GTR is fitted with state-of-the-art racing technology and a centrally located 12-cylinder, 6-litre engine with an output of 441kW (600 hp). FIA regulations state that, apart from engine, ignition and injection control, the racing cars are not allowed any electronic assistants such as anti-lock braking system (ABS), acceleration slip control (ASR) or an active suspension. As a production line racing car in a batch of 25 licensed for road use, the CLK-GTR could also be purchased by interested customers with no racing ambitions and at a cost of nearly $2m was the most expensive production run car in the world. Construction year: 1997; Cylinders: V12; Cubic capacity: 5986cc; Output: 600hp (441kW) Top speed: 345km/h.

Egypt crowd attacks candidate's office

CAIRO (AP) ? Security officials and witnesses say several hundred people have ransacked the campaign headquarters of an Egyptian presidential candidate who was ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

The crowd attacked Ahmed Shafiq's Cairo office, smashing windows, tossing out campaign signs and tearing up posters. Then they set fire to the building. No one was hurt.

The attack comes just hours after the country's election commission announced Monday that Shafiq would face the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, in a June 16-17 runoff for the presidency.

Shafiq is opposed by the revolutionaries who helped toppled Mubarak last year, while many also fear the Brotherhood's religious rhetoric.

Protests also erupted in downtown Cairo and the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood is scrambling to broaden its appeal to liberals, leftists and Christians after official results Monday showed that the Islamist group's candidate will face ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister in next month's runoff for president of Egypt.

To get the support it needs, the Brotherhood must tone down its religious rhetoric and offer far-reaching concessions, such as protecting the right to protest and strike, election-watchers said.

The Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, will go head-to-head against Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander, in the June 16-17 runoff. They were the top vote-getters in last week's first round of voting.

None of the 13 candidates had been expected to get the more than 50 percent of the vote needed to win outright. Still, Morsi's top finish was a surprisingly strong showing, because he was widely viewed as a weak candidate and because the Brotherhood's popularity has eroded recently because of a series of missteps.

Announcing the final results, election commission chief Farouq Sultan said that Morsi won close to 5.8 million votes, or almost 25 percent, while Shafiq garnered 5.5 million votes, or nearly 24 percent. Finishing third was leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi with 4.8 million votes, or about 21 percent.

Several hundred Sabahi supporters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of last year's uprising, chanting slogans against the military, Morsi and Shafiq. Similar numbers gathered in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, where some of the protesters tore down a large Shafiq poster.

Turnout among the country's 50 million registered voters was more than 46 percent, Sultan said.

Shafiq is widely viewed as an extension of the Mubarak regime, and the Morsi-Shafiq runoff is the most polarizing contest possible. In many ways, it mirrors the conflict between Mubarak, himself a career air force officer like Shafiq, and the Islamists he jailed and tortured throughout his years in power.

For Morsi to win, said Khaled Abdel-Hameed, one of the leaders of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak, he must make concrete concessions on specific issues.

"A protest boycott of the election is an option," said Abdel-Hameed. "If not, we want Morsi to adopt a package of legislation guaranteeing freedoms, labor union activity and the right to strike and protest."

The U.S.-educated Morsi appears willing to broaden his appeal but has offered few specifics.

He has vowed to be a "president for all Egyptians" ? a nod to minority Christians who voted overwhelmingly for Shafiq. He has pledged to work to realize the goals of the revolution, a promise designed to appease the pro-democracy youth groups behind the uprising that toppled Mubarak. And he has pledged a national unity government.

"We are certain that the remnants of Mubarak's regime and his gang, and those that belong to it that are trying to bring back the former regime will fall flat and will land in the garbage bin of history," he said.

Morsi's success, said Middle East expert Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Institution in Doha, Qatar, depends on how explicit and concrete the Brotherhood promises will be and whether the group can reassure significant segments of the population that view it as opportunist and hungry for power.

Pro-democracy activists say that the Brotherhood did not join their 2011 anti-Mubarak uprising until it became clear it had irreversible momentum and that it later abandoned them during their protests against military rule so as not to lose the goodwill of the generals who took over from Mubarak.

But the alternative ? Shafiq ? will be hard for them to accept.

"Leftists and liberals can hold their noses and vote for Morsi," Hamid said. "The Muslim Brotherhood is moving to the center and not everyone who did not vote for Morsi in the first round was actually voting against him."

The Brotherhood was empowered by the ouster of Mubarak 15 months ago, emerging as the nation's most dominant political force after spending the best part of nearly 60 years as an illegal, underground organization. It went on to win just under half of all seats in Parliament.

But it has failed to translate its dominance in the legislature into real political power, partly because the generals wield near-absolute authority, and also because of the perceived poor performance of its lawmakers.

Its credibility took a hit when it reversed an earlier decision not to field a candidate in the presidential election. Later, it attempted to pack a 100-member panel assigned to draft the constitution with its own lawmakers and other Islamists.

Khalail el-Anani, an expert on Islamic groups from Britain's Durham University, said the Brotherhood needs to change its thinking and cast aside the "persecuted" approach left over from years in the political wilderness.

"They don't realize that things have changed around them," he said. "In order for him to win, Morsi must reinvent himself as a nonpartisan politician."

Most errors are quickly forgotten. Others end up remaking the face of science

In Brief

  • Mistakes can push scientific understanding forward. Errors that touch on deep features of the world can be more valuable in the long run than narrowly correct ideas.
  • Famously important scientific mistakes include Niels Bohr?s atomic model, the theory of continental drift (in its original form) and the experiments of Enrico Fermi that led to nuclear fission.
  • Two less well-known errors also stand out: a vagabond physicist devised a faster-than-light telegraph in the 1980s. The hunt to uncover its flaws drove advances in quantum information theory.
  • In the 1940s Max Delbr?ck, the key founder of molecular biology, based his research on a number of incorrect and misleading assumptions. He would go on to win a Nobel Prize.

Perhaps more than any other profession, science places a premium on being correct. Of course, most scientists?like most living humans?make plenty of mistakes along the way. Yet not all errors are created equal. Historians have unearthed a number of instances in which an incorrect idea proved far more potent than thousands of others that were trivially mistaken or narrowly correct. These are the productive mistakes: errors that touch on deep, fundamental features of the world around us and prompt further research that leads to major breakthroughs. Mistakes they certainly are. But science would be far worse off without them.

Niels Bohr, for example, created a model of the atom that was wrong in nearly every way, yet it inspired the quantum-mechanical revolution. In the face of enormous skepticism, Alfred Wegener argued that centrifugal forces make the continents move (or ?drift?) along the surface of the earth. He had the right phenomenon, albeit the wrong mechanism. And Enrico Fermi thought that he had created nuclei heavier than uranium, rather than (as we now know) having stumbled on nuclear fission.

If you are an owner of a business that operates online, then you definitely have an idea at just how tough the competition is in the online marketplace. So if you want to ever hope for your business to survive online, then you will need to have an effective advertising strategy. Before you can make money, you will need to have customers first. And that is where advertising comes in. With regards to online advertising, you need to be extra aggressive considering just how tight the competition is online. One of the best way to advertise in the World Wide Web is through the utilization of animated banner ads.

Animated banner ads are basically banners that are found in many websites that hosts or publish it. If the user proceeds to click on the banner, then he or she will be taken to the website of the business that offers the product that's being advertised where a possible sale might happen. The animated banner ad is probably one of the most traditional way to advertise in the Internet which can be traced back in the 1990s when the Internet is starting to gain popularity. And now, even after two decades, banner advertising still continues to be one of the most utilized online advertising method. And this can be considered a testament for its effectiveness. Nowadays it is quite common to come across websites that are filled with banner advertisements.

Many business owners are utilizing banner ads because of the fact that it is one of the easiest way to promote their business. They are usually made with colorful graphics, funny punch lines, vibrant colors or it could even entertain users with a mini-game or elaborate animations. Definitely one of the most well known benefit of animated banner ads is that your brand will reach consumers on a more global scale as opposed to being local only. Because of its great aesthetic appeal, it is easier for owners to establish their brand in the Internet. Depending on how well made the banner is in terms of design and aesthetics, the more user attention you can grab.

The benefits of animated banner ads is not only limited to the business that is being advertised but it can also benefit the website that hosts these ads or the publisher. This is because publishers can also earn a revenue whenever these animated banner ads are clicked by the user. Not necessarily that the user should make a purchase, just as long as the banner is clicked, it means revenue for the publisher.

Animated banner ads are more suitable for large business organizations because in order for these banners to be effective, they need to be distributed on a large scale. And this means quite a good amount of money. Which is why they are not recommended for sole proprietors or small businesses. So if you are looking for an effective advertising strategy, then you might want to consider advertising your business through animated banner ads.
